Any reason why my car interior would smell like vinegar?

Everything online directs to the smell happening when the a/c is on. The vinegar smell though is not coming from the vents. It’s a sudden smell when getting into the car before cranking it.

Any idea what might be causing it?

Did you leave a window down, and a cat crawled in?

Some fungi smell like vinegar, could have some growing in the car in the yeast or mold form.

I’ve heard of older BMW’s smelling like crayons from some of the adhesives used during construction, but vinegar is a new one.

Could be. I have kids.

I just read it could also be the transmission fluid, and I’ve noticed some odd movements when shifting uphill.

Acetic acid comes from bacteria, which grow on food stuffs. So somewhere in your car is a spoiled fruit or similar.
