Why does everyone say we have no depth at linebacker?

It seems to me we have a really solid group there.

There’s only going to be two guys on the field at most times.

Mike Jones looked really good towards the end of last season, and Greg Penn has been named as a standout and looked really good in spring.

Micah Baskerville as a back up is a guy we were worried about losing to the NFL last year.

West Weeks is also a guy who played really well as a freshman last year, a lot of people are very high on him.

Then you have Harold Perkins.

Not to mention Jared Small, who has proven he can play in the SEC, as well as big time recruit DeMario Tolan.

We will only see 2 on the field at a single time. So we have a lot of depth. Almost 3 deep with Penn, Jones, Weeks, Baskerville, Perkins, and Smalls.

I tend to agree honestly. You’re only going to play two LBers in most packages and they seem to like Jones, Baskerville, Penn, Perkins, Fields, and Weeks. On top of guys like Small and some younger guys. I think the depth there is fine.

Mike Jones and Micah Baskerville have both played in the College Football Playoff. Weeks and Penn were on the field plenty last season as true freshman. Considering we are only using two LBs at a time, I think that’s just fine.

I think the depth is fine. I do think we are lacking a real star there.

The issue at LB is much the same at CB. Yes we have dudes and are solid on the 2 deep but we are lacking proven top level guys at those positions. We dont have a lockdown playmaking corner who can tie up an all SEC WR and we dont have any LBs that are in the mold of White, Queen etc who can just dominate.
Penn looks good but is unproven
Jones is still adjusting to the MLB position according to House
Baskerville is solid but still in the doghouse
Weeks looked overmatched in the spring but seems to be coming on
Perkins is a freak but still adjusting to the defense

I think we are definitely solid there, but there's still a lot of unknown. Mike Jones did look a lot better at the end of the season, but BK has said that he's still adjusting to the MLB role. I'm glad Penn has looked good, but looking good in the spring doesn't mean he's proven himself. Baskerville is solid, but he's not some incredible talent. I think West Weeks will be really good, but we don't really know at this point.

My point is, there's a lot of talent and potential but that doesn't mean that they are going to automatically produce.

For comparison here are the linebackers drafted in the 5th-6th rounds last year (besides Damone Clark)

Micah McFadden 77 tackles, 6 sacks, 0 interceptions
D’Marco Jackson 119-6-1
Kyron Johnson 61-5.5-0

Ok I got tired of looking all that up but you should see my point. He would’ve been drafted.

We have the guys but we don't have production & synergy. Can they play well together, block in space, get after the QB, etc.

Perkins will emerge as a star this year ala Mathieu. Book it.

Same here. He has the physical gifts to be a star at the position. He just needs the reps & experience to match.
