Same here. Learn the rules baws, I know they can be confusing... kind of like football. Love to see hockey get exposure and spread.

Been watching the NHL for a few weeks now, learning the rules and really am enjoying it. Trying to decide on a favorite team right now.

I recommend the Islanders. Girl I used to date was from Bethpage & we used to go up there for holidays and such, probably went to 8 or 10 games at the old Coliseum. They have a ridiculous and dedicated fan base.
Went back to see UBS and it’s an awesome arena with direct train lines from Penn and Jamaica.
Whatever you do don’t pick Toronto (the Cowboys of the NHL) or NYR (fans are huge douche bags)

They are one of the potential ones, dont know if its the colors (Mets fan, lol ) but i was drawn to them. Also really enjoy the Oilers when I watch them play.

You should really have two: one from the "Original 6" NHL teams and a "newer" team. Mine are the Blackhawks and the Flames. But, I watch pretty much any game I can find. ESPN+ pretty much has them all (except your local blackout [Dallas Stars for Louisiana], and the TNT games).

I really like the Flames logo, always have before I even cared about hockey at all so they are definitely on my radar as well.

This has been where I have been watching them. Usually next day replays I just pick a couple to put on while working. Just trying to pick a few teams to narrow it down to.

Is there a good breakdown of the teams for novices can get up to speed on?

The original six NHL teams are:
NY Rangers
Montreal Canadians
Detroit Red Wings
Boston Bruins
Toronto Maple Leafs
Chicago Blackhawks
These have the deepest history and lore.
Historical expansion "stars" are NY Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers (Gretzky).
Interesting new bloods are Nashville Predators, Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes.

Of the teams I have watched I like the Oilers, Islanders, Canadiens (They will probably be my original 6 team) Flames, Hurricanes, Penguins and the Blues.

I was there last night. Great crowd. I think I underestimated how many hockey fans there are in this city. I saw a multitude of jerseys of a bunch of different teams.
A couple of comments:
1. The configuration sucked. I’d think they would definitely address this if we got a team again.
2. It’s time to update the electronic boards and equipment in that building. It was like stepping back into 1996 with that old overhead scoreboard (which wasn’t even in use. Neither were the ribbon scoreboards around the 100 level.)
3. The lighting was bad. Probably because nobody has changed a bulb in that place in decades. Easy fix.
4. Sound system was way too low volume wise, but understandable for a pop up exhibition game.
5. Parking was an abject nightmare and the plaza entrance on St Louis, while cool, still can’t be the only entry point.
All that said, those should be easy fixes to return the River Center to its past Hockey glory. I am jacked up about the possible return of the Fish. Granted the 2 teams we saw last night were some kind of awful, it was still a lot of fun and was easy to catch a glimpse of what it could be like once again. I’m all for it. Ready to get my season tickets!

Exit on North not Government and park on the street near Little Village and Mathernes. Easy in easy out zero traffic either way. It’s only like a 6 block walk.

it's not.
there's a street level entrance by the original ticket office on River Road by the crossover b/w RC and Planetarium.

I remember going to see WCW there in the late 90’s and you could enter the place at almost any of those upper level doors that were closed last night.

security was a lot different back then. also, those hand scanners for electronic tickets ain't cheap.

Agreed with all your points.
Also, I’m not sure why they didn’t use the actual lower seating. There were no real “glass seats” but only platform that was about 4 foot from the glass and a pretty dangerous height if you stood up on the front row.
And I’m not sure if it was just our area but we couldn’t understand anything. Just a loud echo from the speakers.
That said we had an absolute blast and I would be first in line to buy season tickets if we got a team.

If you’ve ever been to an arena that knows what they’re doing they have scanners at every door like that. If Baton Rouge wants to make this a real thing and not a flash in the pan that leaves after two years because everyone is tired of bullshite trying to get to the game Baton Rouge need to step up and put a little effort into it.
They can’t treat this like Garfield on Ice. There are going to be a bunch of games in the arena every season. They need to turn the arena into a place people actually want to go.
