You should really have two: one from the "Original 6" NHL teams and a "newer" team. Mine are the Blackhawks and the Flames. But, I watch pretty much any game I can find. ESPN+ pretty much has them all (except your local blackout [Dallas Stars for Louisiana], and the TNT games).

Been a Red Wings fan my entire life. Started rooting for the Lightning when I moved to the Tampa area. Don't live there at the moment, but hope to get back to the Tampa area eventually.

3 games are perfect for BR. No way will another team ever make enough money to stay.

They need to turn the arena into a place people actually want to go.

They for sure will not do that.

Three games a year would probably be about right. Keep it as a novelty.

Otherwise, once the newness of a full-time team wears off, people will tire quickly of an aging, outdated arena with poor traffic access, poor concessions, poor staffing and long food and bathroom lines. And then the team will leave.

I loved going to the Kingfish games back in the day and I’m hoping to go Thursday the 15th. But I got mixed reviews from people who went last night, and their complaints were of issues I wouldn’t tolerate for more than one or two games a year.

The FPHL’s smallest arena is 700 people. It’s a business model that can work here, and if we can’t get 700 people consistently to games then no one should ever try again.

This is so much smaller than the ECHL.

And with the amount of NHL teams I saw represented last night, and cheap tickets, I’d imagine there would be 700+ season ticket purchases each year after the newness wore off.

Will it work long term? We will see, but given the FPHLs arena capacity is - I don’t think it’s a slam dunk this becomes the 90s 2.0

If you’ve ever been to an arena that knows what they’re doing they have scanners at every door like that

I have.

We're talking the River Center here

Surely the river center would charge significantly more to lease so not so fast.

They need much more than 700.

I’d imagine so, but the point was that the FPHL operates on a VERY small budget compared to the ECHL. Also, Barry Soskin is probably the right guy to bring a team here and sustain it for a while.

If we had 700 season ticket seats paid for year in and year out, we probably hit 1000-1500 paid in most games and higher in any playoff game. I’d think that’s lowballing, too.

Soskin knows what he’s doing. He sees profit here. Or just loves hockey enough to make it work.

Interesting new bloods are Nashville Predators, Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes.

The Kraken are a fun team to watch… you can catch every game on ESPN+ and their broadcast team is top notch. One of the best teams in the West!

Hopefully the league expands some more. If they have 12 teams next season, that would be the most amount the league has had in its 12-year history.

A lot of teams have folded over the years, though.

The Carolina team that was here seems to have some support in their town. All of their games have an online stream with a real broadcast, and some brewery even made an official beer. Although the arena does look pretty empty in this pic

I.E. the league sucks. It was such a disappointment this wasn’t the ECHL trying to expand back into the area when this news broke last year. ECHL hockey was GOAT

ECHL was a blast. Sadly, it’s never coming back though. We’re moving forward.

and small budget does not mean the league sucks. They’re growing responsibly without overextending themselves financially.

I think the best case scenario is for BR to get a FPHL team…and then eventually the FPHL AND SPHL merge and combine leagues to make a 24+ team league…with all the familiar names back that BR hockey fans know from the ECHL days, such as Pensacola Ice Flyers, Birmingham Bulls, etc. which used to be in the ECHL but now are already in the SPHL. Now you’ve got a full Southern league with Northeast/Midwest teams. So travel becomes more affordable and you’ve somewhat got enough exposure and teams to recreate the old ECHL glory in a whole new league.

It will also help that there are no icegators or brass this time around. BR will draw hockey fans from those areas.

I would also add, the SPHL is a step up in competition. The hierarchy is FPHL < SPHL < ECHL < AHL…so if there were a merger there would have to be some kind of redistribution of talent to make the league competitive. But that would be the pinnacle of what we could hope for in bringing back that old ECHL magic.
