LSU didn't play that well at Florida, but even a tie against a highly ranked Florida team was a welcome respite after 1983 when the Tigers failed to win a conference game.
That pathetic last minute FG attempt by Juan Betanzos literally turned my stomach. Dis-GUST-ing!!!

LSU was SEC champions in 1984, and played in the Sugar Bowl v. Nebraska. Florida was ineligible for championship status, and postseason play that year.

One of the 1st games I remember as a kid, not much of the actual game but how happy my dad was while watching. I can vividly recall asking ‘Wouldn’t it have been better if they won?’ He said ‘Yeah, but things are looking up.’

Actually, it was on TV. My next door neighbor had one of those 15 foot wide satellite dishes installed that week. My neighbor drove by, stopped, and asked when our neighbor got the dish.
We went inside, watched it with no sound.

So I was watching this and I noticed that FL fans really haven’t evolved much over the past 40 years. Saw a lot of mullets and tank tops and I still see that in their stadium

Great coach, but he refused to interview Steve Spurrier as his replacement. Then he quickly became AD at the U of Florida and guess who he hired as Head Coach?? Yes Steve Spurrier.
Look at the timeline.
This is a myth that needs to die.

I’m with you. It’s amazing how this myth won’t die. Arnsparger was ready to retire from coaching. He was offered AD/head coach deal but didn’t want it. He knew that LSU had whole team coming back and told the administration if you don’t make major changes can win National Championship next year. Archers first year 10-1-1 with a tie against Ohio State and loss to Alabama in a year LSU was better than them. Finished in top 5. Arnsparger never tried to screw LSU as so many fans want to believe.

Bill Arnsparger was definitely a very good coach, but 2 things I will always remember 0-3 in bowl games and the whole Florida fiasco, even after Steve Myers called him out and he denied it.

Arnsparger was one of the best, true coaches we ever had and we apparently didn't appreciate him enough when he was here.
He was a great defensive mind, didn't care much for the recruiting part of the game and claimed not to like the politics but played it pretty well.
He had a curious approach to bowl preparation and LSU never won any of the 3 bowls he coached....the 85 Liberty Bowl may have been one of the worst bowl performances in my lifetime - and my lifetime if over 50 years.

Loved Arnsparger … Ramsey Dadar , Henry Thomas , Bill Elko. On and on Bad asses too many to remember.

I want to say that Juan may have been all SEC the year before and went in the toilet that year. If I remember correctly he was eventually replaced by Ronnie Lewis. A year or two later same thing happened to Lewis and he was replaced by Browndyke.

Dardar and Elko played for Stovall.

I was younger but remember one of the kickers threw up the double birds to the Student section. Forget which one but my buddy had the picture hanging in his locker from the Advocate.

Not on live TV. Florida was on probation in 1986 and ineligible for live TV.

That's no where near how all of that happened. Not even close. Arnsparger didn't interview anyone. Spurrier did get an interview but wasn't highly regarded at the time. Keep in mind that at the same time Alabama,Southern Cal and Texas had job openings at didn't even interview him.Evidently they felt Bill Curry,David McWilliams and Larry Smith were better coaches than Spurrier.
Arnsparger had an ego the size of I-10. After Galen Hall was forced out during the 1989 season, Arnsparger wanted to make Gary Darnell full time head coach instead of interim. He didn't want Spurrier. Their board of supervisors,or whatever its called, told him if you don't hire Spurrier you're gone.
Stop with this Arnsparger/Spurrier conspriacy. ITS NOT TRUE!
