OK. Thanks for straightening that out. I had heard that 20 years ago.

That’s the one where they let the players get to Memphis on their own.

I was there. It was the worst bowl game and one of the top 5 worst games of the ~300 LSU football games that I have seen in person since 1980.

Was that game on Gator Vision?
Kerwin Bell was a walk on...didn't know that until recently when I was researching this game. I remember tying but thought it was at Tiger Stadium.

2 years later in 86 went to Gainesville. Tigers took that one 28-17. Game was a blur but it was hot as hell.
Hottest game I have ever been to. Sure, the 2018 Auburn game was hot too, but I was in Tiger Band and our seats were low in the north end zone with all of that heat from the astroturf was murder at the 1:30 kickoff.
GEAUX TIGERS!

The 1984 LSU-Florida game was the first ever dedicated "SEC Game of the Week",which was on WTBS and then became, the JP game,Lincoln Financial, etc.

LSU had kicking issues
You're not just wolfin'. Juan Betanzos was the worst, as witnessed in the sickening conclusion of the Florida contest. He continued shanking FGs as the season went along, including two short-range attempts in the second half vs Arizona, which turn a somewhat comfortable win into a nailbiter. The final straw was later in the season against Ole Miss when he sliced a 20 yard FG attempt and missed TWO extra points. A disgusted Arnsparger benched him in favor of Ronnie Lewis, who proved to be just as bad, if not worse.

Incredible what Arnsparger did with that team. That was the same line as in 1983; that Tiger team lost all its SEC games (the only LSU team to ever do so.)

He had a curious approach to bowl preparation and LSU never won any of the 3 bowls he coached
To be fair Nebraska was a decisive favorite in both the 1985 and 1987 Sugar Bowls. LSU played them competitively in the first halfs of both games; the Huskers' superiority and depth wore them out in the second half.

This was the game that started to solidify my white hot hatred of Florida. I watched it with my grandad and he just kept saying, "look at the size of those Florida OL, best team money can buy!" He had this deep seated disgust in his voice. My indoctrination was complete.

I recall hearing a radio interview a while back of one of Arnsparger's former players. He said Arnsparger never really cared all that much about the bowl games. He looked at it more as a vacation for the plyers. Essentially, unless the national championship was at stake it was a glorified exhibition game (which it is!).
Arnsbarger came to LSU after 20 years in the NFL. In the NFL you don't play the regular season only to go to a "postseason" where win or lose the season ends regardless.

The only real stinker was the Liberty Bowl loss to Baylor. The other games were losses, too, but we were playing a pretty stout Nebraska team in the Sugar Bowl. I didn't like any of the losses but the Liberty Bowl stood out. The others were (sort of) explainable.

After Michael Brooks tore his ACL on the artificial turf at Fla., Arnsbarger became Florida's AD and he put in natural sod. He was a great coach who had no tolerance for fools.

That UF team had several future NFL starters. It was their best team in quite some time, maybe as far back to when Spurrier was at QB and won the Heisman.

That was the first game of my Freshman year at LSU. I watched it at Mr Gatties Pizza off of Highland Rd.
