A £20million superyacht owned by a company boss worth more than £400million has gone up in flames off the coast of a Spanish island.

The 150ft vessel Aria SF caught fire Thursday afternoon in Cala Saona, on the west coast of the Mediterranean isle of Formentera, just a month after being delivered to owner Paolo Scudieri.

The black smoke the fire caused could be seen as far away as the neighbouring island of Ibiza.

Naples-born industrialist Mr Scudieri is the chairman of car interior components producer Gruppo Addler, which was founded by his father Achille in 1956.

Father-of-four Mr Scudieri, 62, whose net worth is estimated at $500m, is the ambassador for tourisim of the Principality of Monaco and sits on the board of the Banco di Napoli.

The superyacht that went up in flames, which boasted a swimming pool, five bedrooms and a gym, was due to make its official debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival later this year.

Sorry, the girls got carried away with the candles and hot wax. But I'll build back better and stronger.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Do you try to put it out or just tow it to deep water and salute as it goes down?

Based on the color of the flames, that is fuel burning, they are not likely to put that out unless there are some firefighting boats there that can spray it down with foam.

It's the cured epoxy resin that is making that smoke. Hardened epoxy resin is pretty fire resistant at normal temps however it will become flammable under approximately 1000 degrees F and once it gets going it will spread to adject resins. IDK what caused the fire but something got the fiberglass hot enough to ignite and after that it was too late.

Seems inexpensive for a superyacht. There's a few north of 300 million.
