there has to be more to this story.
I suspect Venables is cleaning house and he served himself up on a platter.
OU has been hypersensitive about racial shite ever since that frat video surfaced a few years ago, "there'll never be a n***** SAE" chant.

99.9% chance he was asked to resign, and that’s just another word for fired.

A few questions.
Who from the meeting room whined about the poo-poo word? A player? Does the team know who it is? Are they happy about it?
Does anything happen to the player who walked around with an iPad with such an evil word on it? Or is it just "the word that must not be spoken aloud by a cracker"?

All he had to do was self edit or have fellow coach DeMarco Murray read what was on the iPad.
Gunfy had options to still discipline the player.
He chose poorly.
He should have known better.

Gotta love armchair quarterbacks. I can totally see how easy it would’ve been to had been reading something in the heat of the moment. I’m not excusing him. I’m humanizing him. It’s not like he used it in a name calling way. This world is so fricked.

When anyone says "the N word", we all say it in our head or know the word. It's silly and a complete game.
No offense intended to DD, but IMHO, saying "the N word," sounds adolescent. "Ooo, he said 'the N word;' I'm going to go tattle to the teacher." Either say "used a racial slur" or just say the word.
The way people act any more when they hear a racial slur, you'd think it was toxic/radioactive/kyptonite. It's just a word, and whatever power it has over you, is the power you gave it.

It sounds like this is a coach the players didn't really love and this was the opportunity to push him out. I promise you. If this was a coach that was well liked you'd have many players (including black players) defending him and wanting him to stay.
Nick Saban or Kirby Smart could do the exact same thing and we wouldn't hear anything about it. Why? Because the majority of the players, black and white, want to play for those guys.

Are we even sure it's the N-word?
Maybe he called women bitches and hoes or gays figs or something like that?

It's abhorrent that we live in a world where one fricking word can get you completely swept out of your life, ending your career. This guy's entire coaching life is over - just like that.
But still, it's a pretty retarded, dipshit move to say this word aloud nowadays - especially knowing the environment.

Venables must have wanted to get rid of him but needed political cover since the guy had been there for 23 years.

Yes, clearly this employee of 23 years should have been fired for reading a word off a player's iPad:
quote:
"I owe it to Sooner Nation to be transparent about what led to this decision: Last week, during a film session, I instructed my players to take notes. I noticed a player was distracted and picked up his iPad and read aloud the words that were written on his screen. The words displayed had nothing to do with football," he said.
"One particular word that I should never – under any circumstance – have uttered was displayed on the screen. In the moment, I did not even realize what I was reading and, as soon as I did, I was horrified.
