I know there was a huge thread recently. I didn’t delve into it, but I question it. The number of people who just accept it and will actually try to shout you down about it amuses me.

Yeah, I just can’t even count how many times I’ve had to explain to a cancer patient the pathologist accidentally looked at his lunch in the microscope instead of the patient’s tissue specimen.

Ooooooh boy.
Is it bad?
For whoever ate this turkey sandwich for lunch, yes. It’s very bad.

The Webb Space Telescope was able to focus on a slice of pepperoni on Earth and take the remarkable detailed photo?
That is AMAZING !!

Wtf makes people do crap like this
You mean "people" in High Places and "Science" White Coats?
Or just "people" in general? Could be more complicated than we think at first blush.
I propose Five theories.
THEORY #1: It was just a funny goof, plain and simple (turrible judgement when you're a "physicist at France’s Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission").
THEORY #2:: Attention and dopamine-ruuush for the Likes (17.3K), Quote Tweets (2,108), and Retweets (2,750)
THEORY #3: Since the White Coats know *whatever* they say or tweet WILL BE BELIEVED, maybe this guy's God-Complex got the best of him. For curiosity reasons, he wanted to test the gullibility level of True Believers.
THEORY #4: This was an act of contempt for True Believers. He purposely tweaked their nipples. IOW, the guy's a real jerk.
THEORY #5: Some Scientists may actually feel guilty and be burdened over knowing certain "Science" just isn't true. *Maybe* his framing his Pepperoni "Star" tweet as a "Joke" was this White Coat's way of spilling beans (and saying, "Hey -- stop believing everything we say about Space is true. This Webb Telescope stuff *could* all be bullsh*t. And you'd never know it.")

Attention/social acceptance. Humans crave it.
To a degree. But especially when you're in a position of power and authority -- and *know* your tweets will be about a popular subject (Like Space or Cleavage

Especially those who become reliant on those daily FB/Twitter LIKES and approval for a cheap Dopemine rush. It's like sex to these nuts.

This the actual firestorm tweet translation -- followed by Etienne Klein's next two tweets to himself, realizing that he's made a mistake -- that most people were NOT amused by his "joke":
Etienne KLEIN

Photo of Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Sun, located 4.2 light years from us.
She was taken by the JWST.
This level of detail… A new world is revealed day after day.

Well, when it's time for the aperitif, cognitive biases seem to have a field day... So watch out for them. According to contemporary cosmology, no object belonging to Spanish charcuterie exists anywhere but on Earth.

In view of some comments, I feel compelled to clarify that this tweet showing an alleged snapshot of Proxima Centauri was a form of amusement. Let us learn to be wary of arguments from authority as much as the spontaneous eloquence of certain images….
