Why don't people get paid for blood?

I always see guilt trip post about "needing blood" the blood center is "low on donations".
My problem is you go to the hospital. You need blood. You're going to pay $500-1000 per unit of blood that someone'donated'. If you donate that means free. If I donate stuff to hurricane victims I don't expect it to be sold.
This seems to be more of the "thrift shop" model than the pure donation we are made to believe.
Plus I got O- blood and I'm tired of being harassed. ??

Because it seems they will give it away for a T-shirt.

Can you claim a blood donation on your income tax?
Posted on 7/26/22 at 8:45 am to Napoleon
If people will donate without payment, there is no reason to pay.

I think you can get paid for blood and/or plasma.

Why don't people get a tax write-off then?

Yes you can...
quote:
Your donation to the Red Cross is tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Under the CARES Act, in 2020 and 2021, taxpayers who do not itemize may receive a tax deduction of up to $300 for donations to 501(c)(3) organizations. Consult your tax adviser to see how this may apply to you.

You can get paid for plasma. I don't think you get paid for blood.

How much is insurance/ patient billed for a pint of blood? I've never understood this either? Is $5 or $10 that absurd and then you'd never have issues getting blood. I'm assuming the hospital is charging $50-100+ for a pint right?

After seeing the lines of degenerates lined up at the Monroe plasma center I hope I'm never in need of any.

If anything we should be paid interest for it while sitting in a warehouse unused

They don’t pay to discourage people from lying about infections/risk factors in order to donate and receive money.

It’s a common misconception that the Food and Drug Administration bans paying for blood. In fact, it only says blood from paid donors has to be labeled that way. But hospitals won’t use it. In practice, nobody really pays for blood, said Mario Macis, an economist at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School who has studied incentives for blood donation. “Even though it’s legal, it’s still considered not totally moral or ethical to pay cash to blood donors.”
Aside from the ickiness of handing out literal blood money, the FDA worries that paying donors would jeopardize the safety of the blood supply. No one with a blood-borne illness is eligible to donate, but the agency worries that if money were on the line, donors might lie about their health or their risk behaviors.
quote:
Plasma donation — in which blood is drawn, plasma separated out, and then blood cells and other components put back into you — is often compensated. The FDA doesn’t require paid plasma donations to be labeled. The reason is that plasma collected this way never goes straight into another person. It’s broken into many different protein products that will become pharmaceuticals. Along the way, these components are processed to remove or kill any virus stowaways. “The risk of infection is inherently much lower,” said Dr. Christopher Stowell, who recently chaired the FDA’s Blood Products Advisory Committee. Whole red blood cells are too fragile to undergo the same kind of processing as plasma.
