Typically I take the family to Florida GC for our summer vacation but we had a tremendous amount of unexpected healthcare costs this year. I’m starting to feel guilty not being able to take my daughters to the beach, because they absolutely love it.

Is there somewhere within driving distance that is cheap and has a nice beach for the kids to play on. Maybe a pool to swim around in.

Ideas? Thanks.

What’s your location? What do you consider driving distance? Instead of saying cheap, what’s the budget (everyone has a different cheap #)?

Also, when it comes to “cheap” you often get what you pay for with it being over crowded

I live in Covington.

Under $600 for just a long weekend. Don’t even know if that’s possible.

Really looking for something kid friendly. I have little ones.

Maybe try for one of the hotels in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.
There is a Marriott property (Spring Hill Suites) in Orange Beach that is across the street from the beach. It had a pool and a cart that brings you across to the beach.

Just got back from Galveston for 4 days . Stayed at the Victorian , Did pleasure pier and downtown . Beach was ok .It might be a little over your budget . Had two kids in tow and they loved the pools .

there are a bunch of nice cabins on the homochitto and bogue chitto rivers in MS an hour from your house. The ones we like are on shallow areas with sand beaches where you can just turn the kids (and dogs) loose while you relax

you can also take the family kayaking/canoeing/tubing in the area

If big thing is the beach and cost just ho to Biloxi and lounge out on the beach. While not the nicest it isn't a horrible option, then you could take the kids to the lazy river or go cart racing

Good suggestion and one I often make for my friends, But keep it a little farther west (Long Beach, pass Christian) if you want to be less crowded. Pass Christian has a couple of nice boutique hotels, some Airbnbs, and some good restaurants. You can take the ferry out to ship island, go see the nasa museum, the aquarium (though it’s reportedly expensive for what it is), the Biloxi tour train, Biloxi shuckers game, etc…

That sounds different and something they would enjoy. Anything specific to point me in the right direction?

look up blue heron cabin and thunder ridge brushy creek cabin. You can book both on airbnb. Both are on shallow rivers with easy access

Yeah I guess that’s the summer rates.
The hotels with the nice pools and lazy River, etc in the Biloxi are are probably at least $250/night on the weekends

Yep. Both of those will be hard to do with a $600 budget. The camping/canoeing is definitely the way to go with that type of budget.

If he is looking for next weekend the IP would 570 for Friday till Sunday. Now if cost is an issue he could stay in Pascagoula for under 400 for those dates and just drive the 10 minutes to the beach.

Now if you are willing to do Airbnb they have a few Condos and townhouses around that have pools and would be near the beach for under 600. Entire places to yourself as well.

Gulf Coast hotels have become stupidly expensive with "regular" condos exceeding $500 a night!

We're giving St. Augustine a try in a few weeks. A 9 hour drive, but the hotels on Vilano Beach and Anastasia Island are less than $200 per night.

Beach...kind of.

Maybe this will interest you.

Chestnut Bay resort

It is about a 6 hour drive, on a lake, multiple pools, lake homes at a reasonable price.
