Landmark study shows that pricy drugs do little to help mental health

Psychiatrists have been aware for years that low serotonin levels may not cause depression, despite continuing to prescribe the pills, a chair of psychology has said.
Dr Jonathan Raskin, from State University of New York, told DailyMail.com he'd been concerned that the theory that depression was caused by low serotonin levels was 'incomplete' for 'a while'.
But he said many medics continued to prescribe the medication, even while they were unsure if they were effective, because it was 'easier' than offering more time-intensive care.

It has been known that Mental Illness has been more political than Science for a long time.
Diet and Exercise and telling yourself the truth does far more for mental health than drugs.
The entire ADD industry is a scam.

Using pills as a magic potion has let people avoid changing their behavior which leads to more depression and anxiety.

We do more therapy, more psych/depression drugs now than ever.
Yet, people are fricked in the head.
At some point, we've got to evaluate if our efforts are doing anything.

people are depressed because there is a major issue/hole in their life (or several) and i believe lack of community is leading the charge in the increasing rate of depression

The entire mental health industry is a sham.

I think for a lot of people we just live far different lives than we were evolved to live. Inside all day and eating junk food. No sunshine, no exercise then add on Social Media. Scrolling fake stuff all day and comparing ourselves to that.
Lastly, we have removed responsibility. Everyone can be a victim now. No one has to take ownership in their lives. People can just lie to themselves all day about why they are where they are and take pills.

they're more likely to be plagued by poverty, shitty surroundings, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, etc... but they're hanging out with their lifelong friends and cousins outside all the time. white folks are inside with their immediate family (if they're lucky and the parents aren't divorced).

I’ve been saying this for years. Everything moves so much faster now with such an incredible amount of stimulation to deal with, information to process, problems to solve. Our brains just aren’t built for that. It’s good at focusing on making sure we don’t starve. But remove that problem, and it decides that whatever is left must be very important, even if it isn’t. It would likely take us thousands of years to adapt to the changes society went through in just a century, so we would be better served by looking at which aspects of society we can change for the better.

So much truth here.
People do not get better without:
1. Healthy sleep.
2. Healthy exercise daily.
3. Healthy weight.
4. Healthy relationships - this is determined by you, not who you are around. You can choose to put up excellent boundaries and improve every relationship in your life in 90 days.
5. (Most important) A purpose for living that has actual value. Serving others and helping your community.
Once all those boxes are checked, medication and therapy can be very helpful when chosen correctly.
Edit: the fact that people are downvoting my recommendation for healthy living and intentional goals for self and relationships says it all.

Some of the drugs are quite pricy, but many are quite cheap (e.g. you can get a 90-day supply of prozac for $10). The alternative, therapy, is quite expensive.

I’ve been on most antidepressants throughout my life and SSRIs never worked.

Most things that are natural to man, have been demonized. We all are forced to play a part to be acceptable, which is why everyone is depressed and confused.

I'm not against therapy and i'm not against some medicating, but the medical community's inability to prescribe better, healthier living before drugs is grave injustice.
Jordan Peterson has been yelling this in a kermit the frog voice for years.

Look to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs for your answer on why depression is so common.
A lot of people suffer from depression because they feel they already achieved everything in the pyramid up to self-actualization or they have maxed out what is possible given their resources. Now their brains are bored.
This is why exercise and staying busy is key to avoiding depression.

On the flip side, Tom himself admitted he was full of shite on postpartum after Katie went through it after their daughter’s birth.
He had gotten called out on it by an actress (Brooke Shields?) before that then had to apologize after Katie had it.
