Republicans should make sure not to get caught up in this distraction.

The Bush Administration inserted itself into the marriage debate with DOMA.

Doesn't matter who....the point is, the federal government inserted itself into marriage .

I’m confused, I thought gay marriage was legalized everywhere and a thing now?

Government should get out of the marriage business and get out of the business of punishing those of us intelligent enough to know that gay marriages aren't really marriages.

Abortion was legal for 49 years but never codified

Is marriage an explicitly Christian thing?
Why should churches be involved in marriage?
Source I can find suggests that marriage originated in Mesopotamia whose religion was not Christianity.

Can you explain exactly what you mean?
Churches = Christian place of worship.
User I replied to talked about returning marriages to churches. Therefore, the only thing I can infer from that is the user is suggesting that marriage is a Christian thing. Therefore, my question still stands.

If there was ever a perfect example of an oxymoron bill, this is it.
A marriage is a religious ceremony. A civil union is a government matter.

The federal government has done more for gay marriage than straight marriage. It costs more for poor people to be married than it does to be single and collect government checks.

will this mean that men can get pregnant now?

in the transgender age, does same-sex marriage have any meaning?

This pains me to say, but the USA should treat marriage like the French do.
In France, only a ceremony performed by a government functionary is recognized as a legal union. Any religious ceremony is not a legal union, so most French couples get "married" twice, once in church and once at City Hall.
Since the government is involved in the marriage business whether you like it or not, do it this way.

Pretty much like filing for a partnership or corporation with the state.

Stop being obtuse, it’s pretty much universally understood that when someone says the word church in this context refers to all houses of worship.

Why is this necessary? I thought the Supreme Court affirmed marriage in the 2012 Obergefell decision.
