On his way back from his first voyage he penned a letter to “Their Catholic Highnesses” Ferdinand and Isabella, promising “as much gold as they want …spices and cotton, as much as their Highnesses shall command … and slaves, as many as they shall order, who will be idolators.”

Columbus was such a shitty explorer that when Amerigo Vespucci showed up in 1493, he immeditately understood that Columbus had not landed on the East Indies.

The Spaniards (I know Columbus was Italian but he was working for Spain) who conquered the New World were a motley assortment of petty and not so petty criminals, social climbers looking for a way up, shysters on the make, illegitimate offspring of nobility and mercenaries in search of the next war. They were real pieces of work, but that's par for the course for an endeavour like this.

I blame most of my problems on the curse of a familial legacy that goes back 600 years

And yet the very men of his time found his tactics so brutal that they recommended his removal from office as the Governor of the Indies.

Columbus’s conduct in the Caribbean was controversial even in his own time among his contemporaries.

This is an important point. If they had been Christians, the Spaniards would have been obliged to treat them humanely. Since they were heathens, the Spaniards were under no such obligation. That's why there was quite a bit of tension between the Conquistadores and the Catholic missionaries who followed after them.

He went and surveyed and found a land they could conquer and exploit
It’s been done since the dawn of time
