As opposed to simple calorie intake restriction vs calorie burn? I have been doing the calorie watch thing using an app and started exercising regularly over the last three months. In the first 6 weeks I lost 9 pounds- I had set my goals at 1-1 .5 lbs per week. So I was doing great…. But despite continuing the caloric restriction and the exercise I have stopped losing weight over the last month and a half. Getting a little frustrated. A friend recommended a book ‘Living in the Fasting Lane’ by Dr. Jason Fung. I’ve started reading it and it sounds good but I have my doubts and questions about it. What do y’all think?

If you fast and still eat the same amount of calories as you are now you still won't lose weight

Lots of research has come out in the last few months showing that intermittent fasting does nothing special besides help people structure their calorie intake. BioLayne is a good source for this. Also Alan Aragon.

But if it’s helping you with losing weight, then stick with it! Consistency is key.

I'm doing a little mini diet right now to finally lose my Covid 10. It's calorie-restricted without counting calories. Basically, I try to fast as long as I can, and then when I do eat, it's still very small and watery.

Sample day:

First bite 11AMish: 2 cucumbers, a red pepper and a handful of tomatoes.

Snack: drink a cup of pickle juice (flavor/bite provides some satiety + electrolytes)

"Meal": 6PMish - some cold cuts, strawberries, handful of popcorn.

I'm 8 days in and have lost ~5 lbs. I really haven't struggled with hunger at all either. I would guess I haven't had more than 700 calories on any of the days, and likely less than 500 on several. I'll go about another 2 weeks and be done.

I'm all for people losing weight, but this sounds like an eating disorder.

You must eat to lose weight.
If you dont eat you will lose muscle, water, fat, and look so bad it won’t be worth it.

500 calorie deficit.
1g of protein per bodyweight.
If you are accurately tracking your calories in/out and hit a plateau then the focus is on increasing exercise and weight training, not cutting more calories.

Sounds like your body is numb to the exercise you’re doing. Time to get intense and bust through.

Don't confuse fasting with intermittent fasting. Fasting will lower your insulin levels and lead to increased fat burning. Try to shoot for a 72 hour water fast. Break the fast with coconut oil in your coffee followed by some kefir/sauerkraut (non preserved) for the probiotics and then a high quality bone broth.

You'll lose about half a pound of fat each day on average. Plus, it will reset your eating habits moving forward. It eliminates the cravings.

If you’ve gained muscle, your metabolism has sped up, and you will need more calories in the form of protein or fat to break the plateau.

Just sign up for something like Avatar Nutrition, track what you eat, and be done with it.

what? I want to lose 10-15 pounds so I'm doing some calorie restriction for 3-4 weeks - how is that an eating disorder? I'm eating almost 100% whole foods, no seed oils, veggies, fruits and healthy protein.

If I ate simply at replacement caloric levels after the diet, why would I gain 10?

I'll be in a deficit for a few weeks, and then I'll eat around replacement after that. This isn't rocket science.

Listen, the 7 meal a dayers, the keto guys, the weigh all you food nuts hate on IF. The fact is, find what works for YOU! I personally chose IF because I feel better fasted, I eat cleaner (my body doesn’t want sugar and a load of carbs), I sleep better and I just easier for me to not eat. Plus, the shite works, I’ve seen it too many times. My personal fav is OMAD but if I break that I do a min of 18hrs with a 4-5hr feeding window. Throw in a “cheat day” once a week and your good. If you stop seeing results it’s in your intake or your burn, simple fixes. And, you absolutely can maintain your muscle mass while fasting, if done correctly.

Cause your body is going to get used to being starved and start storing food when you go back to eating “normal”.

Nah. I know enough to mix it up. I'll throw a couple of "cheat" days in along the way.

I think everyone should do a 24 hour fast about once/week for various physical and mental benefits. I enjoy eating a lot and sometimes a few beers on weekends so Mondays often work well for the 24 hours (Sun dinner to Monday dinner).

Unless you tend to overeat because of fasting, you will probably lose a little weight. I’ve never tried to lose weight so more about maintaining for me. I’m in that category of trying to gain weight in winter aided by creatine and drop about 8 lbs in summer.
