‘How deep can you dig?’ TikTok trend leaves giant holes on Florida beaches

“I almost fell in one,” Allison Ward said. “I’ve seen indentations, but I’ve never seen holes like this before.”
You might too if you’re doing the Sanibel stoop looking for shells or taking a midnight walk under the stars.
These holes aren’t typically what you’d expect to see rather they’re more like shafts up to 5 feet deep and 4 feet wide.
“I found four holes, but two of them were especially deep,” Ward said after finding holes last Thursday and on Monday morning.
It took the power of Sanibel’s Public Works team to get them patched up.
“When we’re looking at the depth and size of some of these holes that we’ve found on the beach, this wasn’t just really a sandcastle,” Sanibel Mayor Holly Smith said.
Same goes down the coast on Marco Island. The police department posted this picture on social media.

OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND — Digging holes in the sand is just part of a day at the beach, but for a newlywed woman on vacation, a deep hole in the dark quickly became her grave.
Texas woman Ashley O'Connor, 30, was last spotted walking around on the beach sometime after 2 a.m. on July 31. The next morning around 6:30 a.m., beachgoers spotted a limp arm sticking out of the sand and reported it to authorities. After rescue crews cordoned off the area and dug up the body, it was later identified as O'Connor's.
In Ocean City, posted beach regulations stipulate holes must not be dug more than knee-deep of the smallest person in the group. An Ocean City beach patrol officer told CBS News affiliate WJZ that holes dug in the sand can quickly cave in and collapse, burying unsuspecting victims because "the pressure of it is very, very difficult to get out."
Currently, investigators do not suspect any foul play. It is not known who dug the hole and carelessly left it behind. WJZ reports that globally, 31 people have died from similar sand traps over the past decade.

These people need more manual labor in their lives. If everyone has to build a big fence once a year, most of our problems in society would go away.

Digging a hole like that in loose arse gulf coast Florida sand is dangerous as hell. Make them fill it excavation and confined space entry permits and force them to utilize proper shoring, sloping, egress ladders, a certified hole watch attendant complete with entry log, and a lock-out box to account for entry too.
You can never be too safe.

Dig a hole but fill that sob back in before you leave

When we were all kids we were complete retards and full of these amazingly stupid ideas we tried often, and luckily didn't die. However, our reach for those ideas was only the 10 or so other idiots we hung out with in or neighborhood. Now with the help of social media, teenage idiocy can spread like wildfire.

There’s a reason you can’t dig very deep without needing shoring

Not worried about the TikTok idiots. I don't want to take a midnight stroll on the beach and step into one of these.....

So no toes in the water, arse in the sand then?

That sand is gross. You're digging in dirt. I think it should be pure white, too sugary to hold itself up and you would hit water that near the shoreline anyways.
I just would have a hard time going there period. All beaches not between Orange Beach and Destin are fricking disgusting
