Europe's Virtue Signaling Pivot to 'Green' Energy is Backfiring in a Major Way
townhall.com 6/20/2022 Katie Pavlich

For years in their quest to claim "green" energy status, European leaders have shut off their own domestic production of oil and gas in favor of a pipeline from Russia. Their goal has been to lower emissions and claim energy moral superiority while rejecting the reality that modern societies cannot function without fossil fuels.

Now, as Russia wages a war on Ukraine and uses gas production as a weapon against the West, European countries are starting to see their so-called "green" energy revolution backfire in spectacular fashion.

"Germany will restart coal-fired power plants and offer incentives for companies to curb natural gas consumption, marking a new step in the economic war between Europe and Russia," the Wall Street Journal reports. "Berlin unveiled the measures Sunday after Russia cut gas supplies to Europe last week as it punched back against European sanctions and military support for Ukraine."

"Russia’s gradual cutting of gas supplies has raised the specter of a potential fuel shortage if Europe goes into winter with less-than-full stowages. It has also raised prices, putting additional pressure on economies that are already struggling with high inflation and rising borrowing costs and face the prospect of a recession," the report continues.

Meanwhile President Joe Biden continues to plunge the United States into economic ruin by pursuing his alternative energy agenda, which has already led to record gas prices and a looming national security crisis through the depletion of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. While vowing to destroy the oil and gas industry in the U.S., Biden is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia next month in a pursuit of increased oil production and supply.

Effective green energy may happen one day, but the ignorant shitty policy of Democrats and other totalitarians is not the answer.

It will but not anytime soon.

Instead of letting the market figure it out, they destroyed the market. Ironically, we'll have no choice but to use even dirtier fuels

The agenda by these so called leaders is only for themselves and the elites that profit off this shift. They don't give a damn about your gas, food or electric bill.

Why is this such a difficult fact to acknowledge?

What the entire world thinks of as "civilization" is completely dependent upon affordable, reliable energy - which can only be supplied by fossil fuels.

Period.

Germany is weird. It they want green energy they could’ve gone all in on nuclear energy like France. Instead they outlawed it like a bunch of morons

I had quit watching Faux long before that, apparently.

Katie was always my #1 on that network and it was sad to abandon her, but I still follow her as much as I can, and IWPIIHB.

I'm to the point to say frick it and stop drilling completely. Shut the refineries and chemical plants and let the chips fall where they may. I'm tired of hearing about green energy, wokeness, global warming, lbgtq and all the other shite

I hope this destroys the evil SOBs pushing these (self enriching) policies.

The green energy lobby is a racket, full of the worst scumbags.

The most 'green' energy is none other than nuclear power.
It is clean, it is super-safe and highly efficient.

The technological advances in NP over the last 60 years is amazing.

Many of the Generation I & II NP plants are being retired and Generation III NP plants are in operation.

There are efforts & research under way for the next generation of NP plants, ie Gen IV.

GEN_IV

Molten Salt Reactors seem to have a lot of promise and there are still issues that need to be worked on.

quote:

Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) are nuclear reactors that use a fluid fuel in the form of very hot fluoride or chloride salt rather than the solid fuel used in most reactors. Since the fuel salt is liquid, it can be both the fuel (producing the heat) and the coolant (transporting the heat to the power plant). There are many different types of MSRs, including the Molten Salt Breeder Reactor (also know commercially as the Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor, or LFTR). This MSR has Thorium and Uranium dissolved in a fluoride salt and can get planet-scale amounts of energy out of our natural resources of Thorium minerals, much like a fast breeder can get large amounts of energy out of our Uranium minerals. There are also fast breeder fluoride MSRs that don’t use Th at all. And there are chloride salt based fast MSRs that are usually studied as nuclear waste burners due to their extraordinary amount of very fast neutrons.

MSR

What is really catching on is the SMR, Small Modular Reactors.

quote:

WHAT ARE SMRs?

The concept animating SMRs is quite simple. Break down nuclear technology into bite-sized 60-MW components that can be strung together as needed. Absolute cost per module is low, reducing sticker shock for utilities. Delivery of small units can be made using conventional truck and rail. Sites can be located on small plots, including existing brownfield former coal plants.

Developed as a concept in the 1990s, thirty years later, there is yet to be a working commercial unit, with the soonest one now promised for 2027. Of the two demonstration plants in the U.S., NuScale in Utah and TerraForm in Wyoming, NuScale has to date received the most funding, including a recent life-saving $1.4-billion grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, following a long series of delays and cost overruns.

Cost estimates for the 720-MW plant (i.e., twelve 60-unit modules) now total $6.1 billion and counting. At a per-unit cost of more than $8,000/mwh, the NuScale plant is uncompetitive but argued as forgivable for a first-of-its-kind operation.

While NuScale claims that it will ultimately deliver sustainable costs, critics allege that SMR construction costs and cost per kilowatt-hour will miss forecasts by a wide margin.
