Years ago I got into a debate with someone who was retired IRS. He was mad at my post where I said the governement takes your money at the point of a gun. He said, the IRS has no guns and all you are threatened with is jail if you cheat on your taxes. Well hell, I guess that ammo is just to look at then - they don't have any guns!

Years ago I worked on a big bankruptcy/divorce/fraud case. The firm I was working for was appointed by the court to do a complete accounting for the assets. Creditors claimed assets were under-reported by tens of millions of dollars.

We started finding stuff all over, an undisclosed account with a bank here, a yacht there. One day three Revenue agents showed up unannounced and started taking shite. Like literally taking the computers people were working on from them. They all had guns. It was the most senseless and authoritarian thing I had ever seen. They could have easily gotten all the information we had, but for some reason decided to flex on us.

2200 agents x $130,000 year salary + fringe

Maybe that’s a better topic for a thread

It really doesn't. It's probably the cumulative effect of other agencies doing it that we don't even realize are (if this is a real thing).

700k in ammo is not enough to move the needle, as you say. I agree.

Election year fear-mongering to get out the vote. We’ve been through this before.

LEO agencies buy ammo. Water is wet.

If this were a story to worry about, we would see historical spending to determine whether or not this a larger than usual purchase. Larger than usual purchases also tend to happen when tighter budget years are anticipated.

The annual continuing resolution to fund government will probably take longer until full year funding is available next year due to likely changes in House and Senate, so of course government agencies will anticipate lower funding levels next year. When cycles like this happen, they of course stock up before tighter funding years. It’s part of the cycle.

I hope you asked him to explain how they plan to imprison you if they don't have guns somewhere along the line. Most people don't go along to jail voluntarily.

What exactly does the irs do with that ammo? And the post office?
I don't know about the post office, but the IRS is what takes down some big gangsters. Millionaires who otherwise have their tracks covered.

Not sure how often it happens, but I don't think you roll up on someone like that, with just a piece of paper.

The global ammunition market in 2021 was over $22 billion. The US alone was $7.2 billion.

700K is not nearly as much as it sounds

Ammo bought by the government is used to kill people...

Read that again.

Per Hankster, IRS has 2200 special agents.

Perhaps it’s time for them to swap out carry ammo. Let’s estimate a good pistol carrying round at $ 1.25 / round. (It’s likely higher.) To equip each agent with 3 magazines filled w/ carry ammo is roughly $62.50. Two additional 50 count boxes for their glove box (a common practice) would be $125.00 per agent. That would have the cost per agent in carrying ammo around $187.50, likely higher.

That’s roughly $412,000 spent in pistol “carry ammo” alone.

They likely have some long guns also but I doubt to the extent the more mainstream 3 letter agencies do. Those aren’t even being factored in here.

Next, let’s assume they qualify 3 times a year with 2 - 30 round qualification courses each range session. That’s 180 rounds in required qualification courses x 2200 agents = 396,000 rounds.

At .50 a round that’s $198,000 in training ammo.

In the above scenario - which is hypothetical but possible - we have just seen a 2200 man agency legitimately spend $610,000 on ammo in one purchase.

I have no idea what amount of ammo use on the range is normal for an LEO in a year. I just suggested an area of inquiry that any person of reasonable intelligence should have seen. BigMob ran thru a reasonable evaluation of ammo needs, and I honestly thought that such an analysis would include MORE rounds expended on the range. Feel free to counter his analysis.

IRS-CI are LEOs. I suspect that they are REQUIRED to carry (and to spend reasonable practice time on the range). Again, feel free to show otherwise.

Or just be snarky. Your call.
