My dog was a stray that I rescued literally off the street and I love her dearly. But, when I go to work or the store and leave her alone/with a friend or family member for more than 5 or 10 minutes she absolutely freaks out when I return home as if I've been gone for a year and it breaks my heart every single time. Anyone else have a dog who is this way? What's the best way to handle it to help her?

Yes, use to not be an issue but now that the dog is much older he has started having meltdowns when people leave the house.
We have to have a radio on for him, set up his bed a certain way, etc...

Crate train. Both while you're home and away.

I had a boxer that would do this any time I wasn't home during a thunderstorm.

Dog's tally:
4 metal dog crates
2 couches
3 shower curtains
2 holes chewed through walls
1 hole to the concrete in the carpet

I finally gave up and brought him to a no kill shelter.

NB4 trashy for having carpet

Leave the tv on or play some music.

We give ours cbd, make their crate comfortable and leave the TV on for white noise. Not a cure but it has helped

We have a lab that’s like this. He wasn’t abused or anything like that. Just mildly retarded. We give him CBD gummies and they really help.

Spank her everytime you come home so she no longer looks forward to your return.

Yeah I agree with most of what was said so far outside of dropping off at a shelter haha though I get that breed. Crate train is the deal. The pup will cry like a baby when you got the monitor, but it’s your option. Light and tv and audio type stimulants may help some. Trying to crate train is your best next option. Give a treat in and out, provide a chew

Crate train, and use a bark collar if necessary. Leave on the radio or something when you leave.

You can get trazadone for dogs if it's too bad early on.

Enjoy it while it lasts, one day you’ll miss her and wish she was still here with all her issues.

As far as curing that, I have no idea. Mine was like that for 16 years.

Place the crate in front of the television. We used to put the cartoon channel on,lol.
Put a soft, comfy blanket in it with some chew toys.

Oh I know. It's not something that annoys me. I just don't want her to stress out and ever think I'm going to abandon her. Like I said in the OP, she is a stray off the street and I am positive she was ditched.

Crate training helps tremendously with anxiety. And lavender essential oils - my vet gave me some and it has been a life saver.
