Somehow I ended up re-watching this for this first time since the 80's.
HOLY CRAP! It was way worse than i remembered..
How the hell did they go so far backwards in realism/effects/everything?
Note: I do realize this is not intended to be a "sequel", but it is meant to be the exact same characters and take place 6 months after the 1939 version left off.
Dorothy:
we go from a 16/17 year old Judy Garland
to a 10 year old Fairuza Balk
from a tin man that actually looks like a man:
to a block of cheap metal with limbs:
from the lead singer for Metallica:
to whatever the hell this is supposed to be:
from the downright awesome original Scarecrow:
to this Nightmare inducing Abomination:

from a straight up evil and terrifying Witch:
to Santa Clause dressed up as a rock trying to smoothly bargain with us.

Probably like the Universal Monsters, they weren't allowed to copy the makeup, so went with something closer to the original illustrations. I haven't seen it in years and years, though.

I have a weird soft spot in my heart for Return to Oz. I enjoyed getting the books from the library as a kid and thought all the villains in the movie were well done. My main gripe as a kid to even now is Dorothy being so young.
The wheelers are stuff of pure terror for a child. The many headed witch is also quite disturbing for the time. With a little more production quality I think the movie would have been excellent.

yes!
especially first couple frames where you see the “mask” on top of their head instead of their faces.

I remember genuinely feeling relieved when Dorothy uses the key to unlock the hidden room that held the bronze soldier to help her with the wheelers. I forget his name.

Tick Tock. The wheelers were pure nightmare fuel as was the princess with all of the heads.
I always wanted to eat one of the lunches that grew on the lunch pail tree

Oh, Lord. I forgot all about this movie. Now I remember my mother (no pics) taking my sister (no pics) and I to see this at the theater. Probably the one at Cortana.

In all of those comparisons, Return to Oz is more accurate to the book.

i get that.
i was more comparing just movie to movie visuals (leaving out books, any animated shows, etc).
especially considering the 2nd movie made it such a point to keep bringing up the original to make sure we knew damn good and well these were the exact same characters rather than allowing us to assume they were different interpretations of them.

A true horror flick as a kid.

It is my wife’s favorite movie of all time and I don’t get it. The first day we got Disney+ she demanded it was the first thing we watched.
I was like WTF did your parents let you watch?

Me too. I remember my mom taking me to the theater to see it after I got back from Cub Scout camp. I get the criticisms of it, but I enjoy it.
