Ahh, ok. So there will 100% be only about 3.5× the national average of violent crimes and gun violence at this "mostly peaceful gathering".

Thanks for the warning.

Lol the weekend when restaurants in Nola roll out prix fixe menus, or close, and hotels check rooms for hot plates.

What an inspiring culture…

Essence Fest isn't anything like Bayou Classic.

The people who attend are from all over the country and have the means to book hotel rooms, restaurant reservations, etc.

I've worked around Essence Fest for years and the people great.

Essence Fest is 99% black women at the actual events, with the streets filled with black dudes checking out the black women in their unapologetically black outfits.

One of my best friends was an ASM (area sales manager) at Dillard's here in BR years ago. He always told me that not only did shoplifting numbers go up exponentially on Essence weekend, but returns to the women's departments always spiked on the Monday/Tuesday after. Women would come in Thursday, "buy" their outfits, then return them after the festival.

Said it happened every year. You could track it.

Expect the festivities to finally get underway roughly an hour after they're scheduled to begin.

There isn't a Dillard's anywhere near Essence Fest.

Why would Essence Fest attendees who are all staying downtown, get in a cab or rental car, get on the Interstate and drive to Metairie, and shoplift?

You're full of shite, and so is your imaginary friend.

Again... Essence Fest is a completely different cut of human from what comes to New Orleans for the Bayou Classic.

As always, there is generally a precursor, a warning, that indicates what is inevitably to come later.

We saw it when Moon, Jr. gave his last opening speech there, when he began with the admonishment to his audience to "stay woke."

It was priceless. The audience responded with laughter.

Not an approving, good-natured laughter, but the snide, derisive, condescending laughter which generally accompanies resentment for having to sit there and be "schooled, patronized" by a pasty little, almost white, guy.

Does this new awareness mean that he won't be invited to this year's fest.

It's their "festival". They can do whatever they like. Why are they saying it's going to be blacker and un-apologetically so .. no one's ever stopped them from being as black as they ever wanted to be (whatever that means?).

This is true victim mentality.

It was Dillards here in Baton Rouge. That's how far it extended.

You can believe it or choose not to. Doesn't change what he told me.
