From a news alert from the Advocate;
“In the end, Johnson kept no secret about why his team came up short: "We've got to pitch better — end of story. That's the story of this tournament. That's the story of the SEC tournament. That's the story of the last regular-season game, and there's nothing about competitiveness, there's nothing about heart. These guys don't need more motivation."

Disagree that pitching is the only problem with this team, fielding is an obvious problem. His decision making is also suspect, so I don’t think he should focus on just pitching

Pitching was the major problem in all 3 instances he described. Fielding was alot better over the stretch he was talking about. Pitching cost us this regional, it cost us the sec tourney, which cost us hosting a regional, and it wouldve cost us in game 3 at vandy if the bats didnt go psycho

I’m sure he’ll address other areas, but this pitching is awful and if it was even slightly better we’re playing next weekend. Literally every bullpen reliever we have dropped the ball and we have no top end guys. It’s not a great place to be.

We didn’t have any starters. I wonder why he never went with rezelman or gervase as a starter. They were our best pitchers outside of Hilliard

At no point whatsoever did he say that pitching was the "only" problem. It was, however, the biggest of all the problems, and that's why he mentioned it.

The defense was actually pretty good the last 3 weeks. The throw from Thompson that was off yesterday was understandable for trying to make that play from way out

Defense will improve when we actually get players that can hit AND play defense. The defense automatically improves when you get Berry off of the field and replace Thompson. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any replacements this year that could offset the offensive production they provided. We will be better next year just by elimination.

How can anyone say fielding was a bigger issue than pitching?

Agree. The pitching could not finish of batters with 2 strikes and when they did the fielding let them down. It’s hard to win games when the walks are so high

Not only was pitching the biggest problem, it was the biggest problem by a wide margin.

I’m glad he came out and said it because that means he will certainly address it in the off season. We put a lot of guys on base with walks this weekend and it absolutely killed us. Defense hurt us a ton too but I think he can get the right players in to shore up our middle infield. Heck if Romero makes it to campus we get a lot better really fast on defense not to mention he can hit.

1) The fielding improved throughout the season and fielding did not cost us a single game in this tournament.
2) His decision making is not suspect, any coach is going to be criticized if his decision doesn't work but for the most part it did work.
3) Pitching was 100% our weakness and needs to be the focus point.
4) If you look at the recruiting class we have good position players coming in and would expect us to get an infielder through the transfer portal so it is not as if they're focusing on pitching everything else be damned.

Spot on. This team simply lacked pitching. It is what it is. He was left with next to nothing. Coleman was the one kid who he inherited with a ton of potential and he got hurt.

He will get it fixed. Time to move forward

Was it just me or did every Southern Miss pitcher look better than what we have? And I bet every one of our players were more highly rated coming out of high school. So, is the real problem pitching development and calling pitches in the game? Most of our pitchers were like 95% fastball and very few could get a breaking ball strike with regularity. Now Bryce Collins seems to have that potential. We need 3 pitch pitchers who can throw them all for strikes.

It wasn’t just you. Our evaluations the last few years have been atrocious to put it nicely.

Funny you mention Collins. He’s a nice prospect but the fact that he’s another transfer Jay brought with him highlights the situation he inherited. Aside from Coleman there was nothing.

Jay will get this fixed, rest easy

You, Sir, are wrong! If we had the pitching that Southern Miss has we would be competing with Tennessee for the national title!

I think the load they were asked to carry all year finally caught up the last couple weekends.

The difference between champions and also-rans in college baseball is pitching. There are freak hitters here or there, but the real difference maker is having a quality (third and) fourth starter. Teams like ULL or USM always play well in tournaments until the third or fourth game, then the pitching becomes suspect. LSU usually has the Joes to push through a regional. Not this year.
