More than 1,000 flights were canceled as of Saturday morning, according to flight tracking website FlightAware, after 2,300 cancellations on Friday.

Delta Air Lines is most affected by the cancellations, with more than 230 flights, or 8% of its operations, axed on Saturday. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, where Delta is headquartered and has its largest hub, is heavily affected by the travel snags.

The carrier blamed Saturday’s cancellations on bad weather and “air traffic control actions” on Friday, saying it is trying to cancel flights at least 24 hours in advance.

United canceled 23 flights and JetBlue canceled 10 Saturday, about 1% of the carriers’ operations

On Thursday, Delta announced it was decreasing its summer flight schedule ahead of Memorial Day weekend. From July 1 through August 7, the airline said, it would cut around 100 daily flights primarily in the US and Latin America.

“More than any time in our history, the various factors currently impacting our operation — weather and air traffic control, vendor staffing, increased COVID case rates contributing to higher-than-planned unscheduled absences in some work groups — are resulting in an operation that isn’t consistently up to the standards Delta has set for the industry in recent years,” said Chief Customer Experience Officer Allison Ausband in an online post.

Airlines also are preemptively canceling almost 200 flights Monday. Delta axed 75 so far.

Separately, JetBlue said it would cut 8% to 10% of its summer schedule.” Alaska Airlines reduced its schedule by about 2% through June to match “pilot capacity.”

Flying is the fricking worst .

Such a miserable experience and that’s assuming that they actually
Keep your flight on the schedule and don’t cancel it last minute

14 year old granddaughter is flying here from La. Just checked, her flight from Seattle is on. I am grateful. That would have sucked.

There's been bad weather in NYC today. JFK has got an average delay of over two hours. That's crummy for me, because I am flying JetBlue from Punta Cana tonight. PUJ-JFK was scheduled at 7:00 PM, but my incoming JFK-PUJ flight took off three hours late, so we'll probably land at JFK about 2:00 AM.

Then our JFK-MSY flight tomorrow leaves at 7:00 AM.

For the first time ever, I'm glad I booked American for this week/weekend travel. Flew down Wednesday with no issues and tonight on time to MSY. Flying southwest on Tuesday but haven't seen many issues there either

Eta- As soon as I posted the above my sisters flight that left here at DFW on time ended up coming back to the gate with a mechanical engine issue. She's still on the plane with no A/C now at gate B6 while I'm at her originally departing gate B7 with a pre departure beverage in hand

Yep. We had issues yesterday with Southwest. Flight out of Sarasota got delayed so much we would miss connection in Houston. Was not going to get stuck in Houston so had to travel north and fly out of Tampa this morning.

Getting to Sarasota was a shite show last weekend as well. Delayed on outbound flight, then sat on tarmac for an hour and a half waiting on a gate to become open for us to get off plane.

I fly for work quite a bit and have experienced the new travel issues, but it annoyed the kids.

Flights are already out of fricking control, this won’t help drive down prices.

When’s that recession coming? Need to cheap airfare.

I'm a frequent loyal Delta flyer so I'm a little nervous about some of the trips I have planned for the summer. They are all domestic with a connecting in Atlanta

Yep.

I check the last like 10 days of the same flight on Flightaware to make sure there isn't any history of delays

That’s because it is. It’s all because of the pilot shortage. Delta will never say this publicaly becuase it gives the pilot’s union leverage in contract negotioations.

hotels were mostly booked and the only one he could get cost 400 a night. sucks for him

Miami did have some nasty weather yesterday afternoon/evening. Lots of diversions and delays so not surprised.

Side note- if anyone needs help tomorrow let me know, I'll be traveling and have a long layover in Denver so happy to try and assist with this mess

Anyone need any help today? Looks like the cancellations are dying down on Delta, United, and American after this weekends earlier issues. Have 3 hours to help if needed

No this is from Boston to Houston. Next week have to go IAH - DCA - LOG - IAH

No way one of those flights doesn’t get screwed up.

Everything looks good on UAL or Jetblue tomorrow morning to IAH so that should at least help get you started. The flight to DC will depend on the weather given that tropical storm moving across FL and a front following it hitting the entire east coast
