No, he didn't. He died of cancer that started in his prostate, then colon, then lungs and bones.
One of his biggest roles was playing Lou Gehrig in "Pride Of The Yankees" who died of ALS.

I've heard that about him to and they say Rod Sterling was almost as bad, apparently he smoked at least 3 to 4 packs a day. And it got him early, I don't think he made it to 50.
I really don't know how they figured smoking that much was a good idea

Serling was a very heavy smoker too, but cancer didn't get him. He died after having a series of heart attacks that finally required open heart surgery, where he had another heart attack during surgery and died 2 days later. He was 50 when he died.
