I don’t know about “all sites” but I can say I’ve been to a couple of small-ish chemical plants lately that have installed and implemented TWIC scanners, requiring fingerprint confirmation, at all entry turnstiles. They certainly were not the types of places I would have expected to see biometric scanners and they damned sure weren’t the types of places that would voluntarily install that stuff.

Something to consider about TWIC though: there are a ton of facilities that have made TWIC a general requirement for access despite it not necessarily being federally required for the entire facility. Shintech is an example of the opposite approach - they require TWIC in specific areas (tank farm/docks for example) but you don’t have to have a TWIC just to enter the plant.

Most places make it a general requirement for convenience reasons. It’s easier to require everyone carry a TWIC so that you don’t have to have additional security for true “secure areas.” But then despite the TWIC requirement, everyone badges in using regular HID cards/scanners. I could see that approach changing if they start having to install fingerprint scanners at every gate. Even putting aside the installation costs, that has to be a productivity nightmare for big refineries and chem plants with a lot of in/out traffic. I’m imagining the logjam at 3:30 if every single person leaving a place like Dow Plaquemine had to stop and scan their fingerprint.

I'm not worried about a facial scan. If you've ever been anywhere, your face is already on video, and those places will all be using facial recognition in a few years.

I flew to Indonesia via Tokyo last week…the facial recognition is already being used in Japan.

Great. We can incorporate this for voting as well?

If they would only apply the rules to fly to voting, I think this would be a net positive overall

In 2018 at Atlanta Hartsfield, facial recognition was the "boarding pass" on an international flight that I took. I don't remember which airline, probably Delta.

Yep, KLM to Amsterdam for me.

Yes, but...its little things like this that subtly condition the lost and the lukewarm to accept the mark when it comes.

I remember when Chevron first started requiring TWICs on certain facilities. They made the decision because they had to submit security plans and the simplest way to get approval was to require a TWIC. Almost like the Feds were trying to push that to happen without actually requiring it.

For now. It didn’t do well in their focus group. Just the tip right now. C’mon. Just the tip.

I have my global entry card so I’m sure my biometrics have been in the system for a while.

Don’t care bypass security and blow through customs.

I have my Global Entry as well. Going through customs last year coming back from Mexico, the Global Entry Kiosk scanned my face and pulled up my info. I thought that was very strange because the scan was incredibly fast.
