CS Lewis: he’s either a lunatic, a liar, or lord.
No room for just a good guy or moral teacher. So if you discount the lord option, then probably yes.

The difference between a cult, a religion, and a mythology is simply the number of people who believe in it, how socially accepted it is, and how long it’s been since it was socially acceptable.

"What is a cult? It's simply not enough people to make a minority" -- Robert Altman

how many cult leaders give up their lives to save the lives of others? Seems like they usually say "we're all gonna die tonight. put on your black track suits and nikes"

He was one of a number of Jews preaching an apocalyptic message around the turn of the century in Roman Palestine. You might argue that Christianity was a cult for a period of time after his death but I don’t see where the historical evidence indicates that he led a cult during his lifetime.

I'm a believer, but with all due respect to Mr. Lewis, who's one of the greatest literary figures of the 20th Century, it's a false trichotomy. He could also be an amalgamation of one or more real people, along with a smattering of folklore, misremembered recollections and misheard stories, along with latter day individuals embellishing the legend for their own purposes.
2000 years from now no telling what they'll be saying about L. Ron Hubbard.
And like I said, I'm a Christian, but you can't refute the counterarguments if you don't know what they are.

Is this not a reasonable question/conversation?

Most cult leadets beat their worshippers and sleep with shite tons of underage girls.
So...no. Even if you are not a Christian, there is no such evidence.

Whether Jesus existed or not wasn’t the question. The liar, lunatic, or lord point Lewis was talking about, like the OP, is part of a discussion that starts with the premise that he did.

Well said. Some say Christ was Elisha reincarnated and John the Baptist was Elijah reincarnated. (Gnostic Secrets of the Naassenes: The Initiatory Teachings of the Last Supper… good book, I recommend.)
