Do you consider Rice and Gravy a side dish or the entree?

Pretty big discussion about this on the
Food board. I grew up with it being considered a side dish. Whatever the meat was (roast, beef tips, pork chops, whatever) and the resulting gravy was the entree. The rice was a side dish that got gravy poured on top. It could have also been mashed potatoes instead of rice. The meal also included a couple other sides like corn, peas or beans.
When I moved to Lafayette I found that they just called it rice and gravy. No mention of the meat. What's for supper? Rice n gravy. Not beef tips. Not smothered pork chops. Rice n gravy. What says the OT?

If it's got a meat in it, it's an entree.
If it's just rice and gravy, it's a side.
If it's just rice and gravy, it's a side.

So if the gravy has meat in it, it makes the rice the entree. Weird

Neither, really... I would say it's a component of the main dish.

Rice and gravy is a side.
Growing up, and currently, it was usually “roast with rice and gravy,” or “smothered pork chops with rice and gravy.”
I’ve never heard of a main having meat and being called just “rice and gravy.”

I mean if you serve meat in gravy on Top of rice it becomes one entree
If you serve meat and rice and cover them both in gravy then it’s a side.
Meat has to be cooked in the gravy.
Also Rice Peas and Gravy are a goat side.

Same here. If it's a stew with meat, potatoes, carrots, etc. then it's an entree, but just gravy and rice----a side dish.
There's a reason places like Popeyes call their beans and rice and mashed potatoes with brown gravy a side dish.
