Did the Saints overpay in draft picks for Olave?

When you factor in the entirety of picks it took to work their way to the 11th? Don’t mistake I love the pick, just wonder what others think, because they did give up a lot.
2023 1st
2024 2nd
Plus this years picks 98, 101, 120, 237
Saints ended up getting Olave the 11th and 194 this year, seems like a lot. If I missed something please point it out.

Our organization has never been afraid of taking big swings.
Regardless of whether or not it makes all the sense in the traditional criteria of draft capital from an EV perspective, it's our DNA to make moves.

The Saints obviously view their team as one able to compete with a down and wide-open NFC.
The Saints needed to get one of the top receivers in the draft and they made sure they did just that. They also wanted an OT to offset the loss of Armstead and did that as well.
I'm okay with giving up picks if they result in impact players, and the Saints seem to have drafted two of them. Now we'll see when they hit the field.

The problem is they put themselves in this situation by not addressing receiver.
Payton got too cocky.

They had to give up the first and second to even make the pick in the first place. They essentially gave up a third and fourth this year and second next year to make the trade up and pick.

Saints need to learn from the Ravens and Steelers that you dont have to trade and give up extra picks to get a great player.

Yes and I’m not even sure it’s debatable. And I don’t use that phrase loosely

Agreed and it's a valid criticism of him. When you had Brees in his prime you could make anything work, but when Brees started to decline it became jarring how bad the receivers actually were.
Payton believed in his system and was right on the cusp of becoming antiquated.

Can't believe I am agreeing with Lester, but yeah you're correct. I think the premium being put on WRs right now is a bit of an overreaction. I don't hate the move. I get it, but it is an overpriced move to make. Let's hope this isn't Brandon Cooks v2

Where did you read that a 2nd round pick was involved?
According to nfl.com, this is the trade the Saints made: We sent them #s 16, 98, and 120 from this year's draft for #11. That's it

I don't think so. I also wouldn't mind them trading their remaining picks to go up and get Nakobe Dean either and have 3 players that can contribute,

If assume we make the playoffs and a decent run then no. I don't want to say 32 because hey that's hard but lets say we pick 28 in the order in 23 and 24. according to the draft value chart we won. Now if we don't make the playoffs and have a mid to higher picker order next two years then we lost. They are assuming they are going to be SB contenders so they took the gamble.
2023 28 - 600
2024 60 - 300
2022 98 - 108
2022 101 - 96
2022 120 - 54
2022 237 - 1
1159
2022 11 - 1250
*edit* forgot to factor in the move back from 18 to 19 which is a difference of 50 so we still won or broke even is we pick 28 or later next two years
2022 total value 11th pick - 1250
future picks given up if we pick 28 or later - 1209

To be fair … WRs took over the playoffs and Super Bowl this year…

Can’t remember 100 percent of the 2nd round pick was involved but if it was, we had to give up our first and second round pick next year to even get the 16th pick this year. So when you put all that together you essentially gave up 5 picks to get one player.

Nah you see a player you want then you go and get him. I Rather do that then wait on players and take a chance on a bust. I’m just happy we didn’t give up two first to move up to the 11th. I get it. If you are looking at it purely from a value standpoint it is a bad deal and everyone wants to sit back and nab a steal. However, the players that fall typically fall for a reason. The browns used to do that a lot and everyone thought they killed the draft and most were bust. There is other areas to look at then just talent. The saints put an emphasis on some of the intangibles that you don’t see that can make or break a player like intelligence, work ethic, motor, teammate, attitude, coachability. They know exactly what they are getting in Olave and have said that publicly.

It’s too early to tell. If he’s here for 5 years and has 239 catches for 20 TDs, then yeah, we “overpayed”. If he makes OROY and becomes a huge weapon with gaudy stats, then no, he was a “bargain”.
As it stands right now, we did give up some draft capital and it was a “pricy” move, but I wouldn’t call it a reach or an “overpayment”. I like that they got their guy and didn’t get stuck with or settle for whoever fell to them.
That being said, I think Olave, Wilson and Williams were a step above the other WRs this year.

There has been a premium on WRs for the past few years because of how offenses are now. But that does not really relate to the draft.
While the demand is high, there are also more good WRs available because CFB is mirroring the same patterns, on down to 7 on 7 in HS.
This is a good WR class and teams will get good WRs into the 4th Rd. How teams are spending does not really affect that.
This was a normal WR draft until the Saints jumped up for Olave. Otherwise nothing too out of the ordinary

Burks will be a much better receiver then Olave. Wasted picks in my opinion.

Literally no one agrees with you so good luck on this one.

If he doesn't become an immediate starter and at least in the top 8 year to year receiver in the league than I'd say they over paid. I do think he checks most the boxes.
