It isn't necessarily pricing us out, but it has kept me away and doing other sorts of vacations instead. Why would I spend $2k to lug my shite out to a hot beach every day and cook my own food or eat in shitty tourist traps.. when I could spend $2k going somewhere much more interesting with better food and attractions?

If I had kids, I think gulf beaches would make more sense. But for two people? It is entirely not worth it unless you just truly love going to the beach.

We are doing a cruise for the first time ever and I can’t get over how cheap it is. Even with the alcohol package and excursions at every port.

For vacations requiring flights, we typically use miles for them.

For everything else, we try to stick to around $2,500-$3,000 for hotels/AirBnB, rental car, meals, activities and everything else.

Our typical vacation takes us to a city/state with stuff to do (Boston, New Hampshire, Montana, etc.) not Hawaii or Disney.

ETA - my wife and I are planning on going to Scotland for our 25th anniv in a few years. That'll be an expensive one...

i've only been of the age and income to rent my own condo for a handful of years now

why is it so expensive to rent a place from orange beach through 30a now? what changed over the last ten or so years?

Statements like this confuse me. Is is really that hard to believe people have expendable money for things like vacations? Or set aside money to do things they enjoy with their family?

On this site, maybe not, though it's quite clear there's a lot of people that lie on here for whatever reason

Nope, they're all in debt and financing.

In general that is correct. Over 50% of people in the 50-80% income range have credit card debt.

And that's not even factoring in that they are probably leveraged to their teets with mortgages and cars and don't contribute to retirement plans.

I think this is it. Just my wife and I could spend over $5k on a vacation. If you get out past Orange Beach, it gets more expensive. And I’m not knocking OBA, we go several times a year for 3-4 days.

Budget is personal and really doesn't equate to fun OP. I've stayed in $50,000/ week vacation homes, nice hotels, and last fall we stayed in $50/ night or less RV parks. Had a blast everywhere.

People get caught up on spending money and going to expensive places. If that's not your cup of tea there's no reason to do it.

There's some awesome RV parks out there for well under $100/ night. You can camp in a tent or stay in a nice RV or even rent a small cabin.

Given all that, with multiple school age kids with limited time off if you want convenient and easy its very easy to start your vacation budget at $5k these days.

This is 100% spot on.

Also, even with a kid - I don't want to lug her diapers, sunscreen, and squeezy pouches all day and deal with baby skin sunburns or sand in her swimsuit.

I’m a single guy going to LV next weekend(Fri-Mon). So far I’m out about $1500 for flight/hotel*/One show. I still have to eat, occupy my time for two other days, and get around.

*It’s NFL Draft weekend, so hotels aren’t very cheap. Had to settle for Harrah’s for what I would normally pay for a step or two up. Could have saved a couple hundred had I realized that before I booked. A

this is a lot of words to subtly brag that you one stayed in a 50k/week vacation home

Hell, even a Disney trip for the family costs me $3,100 How long has it been since you have been and what Motel 6 did you stay in?

I’m taking the family in October. The total is $3,100 before food (since they no longer do meal plans), so probably closer to $3,600-$3,800 when it’s all said and done. We’re driving so no flight cost. Still nowhere near $5k.

Me and the wife took our 17 month old to Hawaii for a week back in March. Added it up after and spent a little over $6k. Told her we aren’t spending like drunken sailors again to take a kid on a vacation he will never remember. Especially while we were buying a new home.

Those saying $5k are blowing me away. Are y’all going to Hawaii or Europe every year or something? Fuuuuuck that. I spend $2,500 at most (usually $1,500-$2,000) on most family vacations. Hell, even a Disney trip for the family costs me $3,100 but that’s so few and far between. If you’re spending $5k on a typical family vacation, you either need to invest in a vasectomy or tone down your extravagant vacations.

Maybe some of us can afford it.

I spent 3 grand last year to fly 4 of us to Denver then drive thru Utah for a week to see many parks, the Canyon, etc

Everyone gets fixated on the beach and that’s one big rip joint .

It takes proper planning and some homework but you can make a trip a lot more affordable.

I feel like for a family with two working professionals, $5000 isn’t an exorbitant amount. As I said earlier, we make $135k/year and do just fine. Anything more would be extra in terms of basic standard of living.

So say we were in some professional jobs that paid $80k/year each. That would be approximately $1500/month more for our budget. $500/month toward vacations and boom, $5000+ for the family trip.

I have absolutely zero debt other than mortgage. Paid off my student loans about 3 weeks ago and paid lump sum to finish out my 4 year loan on my 2021 Aviator this week.

We carry a zero balance on credit cards month to month

4 tanks of gas - $200 if you have a sedan

2 fast food meals for 4 there and back - $120

4 lunches at the parks for 4 - $200

3 dinners while in Orlando - $280

Miscellaneous - $250

That's $4,150 if you have a sedan and do everything pretty much as cheaply and efficiently as possible. Hate to break it to you, but you are dropping 5 g's easily.

But you make over $3k/day so it ain't nothin but a thang G Baby
