A woman my mom has known for her entire life recently found out she has a rare bone cancer that requires a transplant. Her life expectancy is 2 years without the surgery. She can't afford the 800,000 dollars to pay for it though. It's a broken and unfair system.

Remember when Obama fixed it?

Sad news.

BTW, if the USA had single payer/socialized medicine, she would not get the transplant either.

I feel badly for your mom’s friend. Cancer sucks!

But you failed to explain why our health care system is broken and unfair.

Does she not have health insurance? I think we messed up when we came up with Social Security. This country would be better off if we had Healthcare instead of a retirement program for all.

Why doesn't she go to Canada or the UK where it's free?

We took my mom to MD Anderson in Houston to get her into a clinical trial for her acute myloid leukemia. Once we got there she was declined a spot, after they told her she had been accepted over the phone. They said she was too advanced and would be a statistical negative to the trial results. They kept her a few days, tried a couple of meds and sent her back home to Tuscaloosa. She died 31 days later. The so called "system" is unfair.

I don’t really know the solution. Even in countries that have a universal healthcare system have people die while waiting on a transplant.

I've been in medicine over 20 years and cannot name one person denied a transplant or cancer treatment in that time. At least not here in Arkansas. ZERO.

It’s a supply and demand thing. Supply should be up in America though. Highest recorded suicides and overdoses. Homicides are at the highest since 2008.

My dad is the chair at a hospital. I call bullshiat, honestly. Huge chunk of budget set for indigent care, and I’ve never met a single person “denied” care.

I’m sure it has happened, but I call bullshite.

Maybe if our country was not sending billions to Ukraine we would be able to help offset some medical costs for our own citizens.

No one said she was denied care. The problem is the insane amount of money it cost to provide that care like $800,000. Which she can't afford.

She should go in as self-pay, run up the 800k and pay $20.00 a month.

Of course she can.

It's the most fair system in the world. For the low, low price of simply filing bankruptcy, she can get the best care money can buy.

In a socialized system, she wouldn't be able to get the transplant at all.

Are you saying her insurance won't pay for it?
