re: The healthcare system is completely broken in America

We took my mom to MD Anderson in Houston to get her into a clinical trial for her acute myloid leukemia. Once we got there she was declined a spot, after they told her she had been accepted over the phone. They said she was too advanced and would be a statistical negative to the trial results. They kept her a few days, tried a couple of meds and sent her back home to Tuscaloosa. She died 31 days later. The so called "system" is unfair.
I’m sorry to hear about your mom. But not being included in a drug trial (experiment) when you have an advanced malignancy is not evidence that the “system is broken”. The system is imperfect but it’s currently the best we have. Unfortunately healthcare is expensive and modern medicine doesn’t have anywheres near close all the answers figured out.

quote:Frankly, I think this is a damnable lie, however, if it is true, I'm sure there are plenty of churches, charitable organizations and such who will come up with the money to cover the costs of this lady's medical bills. It's done every day. I've found that medical fees are highly negotiable, both before and after the fact. I know all of this from personal experience. At the risk of sounding crass, that first figure of 800K is just the first number thrown out in the barganning process.
A woman my mom has known for her entire life recently found out she has a rare bone cancer that requires a transplant. Her life expectancy is 2 years without the surgery. She can't afford the 800,000 dollars to pay for it though. It's a broken and unfair system.

We have developed a system where the truly wealthy can get access to greater and greater care options, wile the rest of the country is not able to.
We have decided to treat healthcare the same way we treat homes, cars, jeweler, vacation, etc. Your ability to access the best of it, is dependent on your ability to pay for it.
I'm not here to judge if this is right or wrong or if this system is better or worse than other systems. Just stating a fact.
Half of our country believes unlimited access to health care is a "right", and the other half believe it is a "privilege".

Your story is a bit shaky dude.
Even if she didn’t have insurance, a charity hospital would in fact take care of the surgery.
I agree however the system is broken. Courtesy of McCain’s stupid face.

And that, while likely true, is another part of the problem.
Dealing with life saving medical care should not be similar to dealing with a used car salesman.

There is no system where this is not the case, but the reality is that in our system the poor has the same access. Or, they did before Obamacare. Repealing it would be the most humane thing we could do for the good of the country.

Of course it should. The alternative is a group of bureaucrats telling this woman she's too old to get this expensive transplant.

Something’s not right here. She can’t be denied the surgery based on her income. What hospital is this?

This makes no sense whatsoever.
Either this woman:
1) Has insurance through employer and is covered.
2) Has Obamacare and is covered.
OR
3) Has no health insurance. Did not pay Obamacare. Is an illegal alien. IN ALL THREE OF THESE SCENARIOS SHE CAN STILL GET MEDICAL TREATMENT. There are hospitals all over the country that if they participate in any part of the Federal system (Medicare, Medicaid), then your Ma's friend can go to any one of these (usually) large city hospitals, county hospitals, etc. and she will NOT be turned away.
The surgeons at these facilities are generally speaking very good. They see a ton of the trauma victims from gunshots and stabbings who also have no health insurance (or cannot be identified when they are life flighted / taken to that hospital.
You may need to travel a bit if she is out in the middle of nowhere, but I assure you that this is STILL The United States of America and someone will treat her.

I work and have insurance.
I got cancer four years ago and have received extremely expensive care all four years. 3 surgeries and four rounds of radiation. My bills have run close to 700,000 and all I pay is 4,000 a year.
Thankfully, I don’t have bad symptoms and have been able to keep my job but I would say the health care system works for me.
And I’m not a rich, important or powerful person. Just a guy who has a white collar job and works 40 hours a week.

That is not true.
Post Obamacare, there is usually only one or two hospitals in every large city that will take the so called indigent.
I agree with you that something isn't right though.
Someone needs to direct her to the closest county / city hospital that is part of the national system that covers uninsured/illegal alien/indigent health care.
Their are still a lot of them but I suppose if this woman lives in the middle of the Arctic Circle or something like that, she'd probably have to go to a place like Nome or Anchorage as an example.

Cancer pays big bucks to the medical establishment.
($800k) in this instance.
There is no big payday for hospitals, doctors or big pharma if cancer could be cured.
That is why we have no cure for cancer.

All she has to do is go down to the border and cross illegally. She'll get all the free Healthcare she can handle.

Health care is not broken, it’s not like the democrats are screaming for medi care for everyone, and medicare is not almost broke ,,,oh wait it is

If not, she needs to do one of three things. Either apply for emergent ACA inclusion, liquidate and pass assets to family, then go with Medicaid, and/or wait for open-enrollment, then get coverage.

The half that thinks health care is a "right" are freeloaders who want others to subsidize them.

Cool. The shite tier socialized healthcare systems see the rich and able fly to America for treatment because they would rather not wait months or years for their appointments or surgeries
Have you talked to many wounded veterans that deal primarily with the VA? Ask about how great the VA is…. Then expand the VA to not cover single digit percentages of Americans, but cover 100% of Americans and imagine the shite show.
