I love it, I find it interesting. I’ve been on two juries.
One was a guy suing EBRP for $2.5M, from a slight fender bender with a school bus. This bus didn’t even have damage. His truck had a scuff on the front quarter panel. He made something like $12,000 a year and he was 30+ years old. His lawyer showed the breakdown of the $2.5M, from lost past and future wages, back pain, etc.
We gave him nothing.

The other was an attempted murder & attempted feticide. He shot his baby momma in the chest, she was 7.5 months pregnant.
He got at least 50 years for the attempted murder, not sure what he got for the feticide.

I try to get selected for the jury. I get paid from work, and just find it interesting.

Did it once and loved it. Armed robbery of the Olive Garden in Lafayette. Put the guy away after his partner in crime cut a deal and ratted him out. Cops eventually found him hiding on the top shelf in a hall closet of a shitty apartment. Crazy thing was after we put him away he actually ESCAPED for Lafayette Parish Jail. Cops eventually found him hiding in a dumpster behind a gas station on Ambassador later that day. Dumbass was not very good at hiding lol

I've never even been asked to show up for jury duty and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Judge Ellison (Southern District of Texas) gives a speech to potential jurors.

He describes how the founding fathers would struggle to understand the First Amendment in a 21st century world. How the Fourth applies to computers, well, they couldn’t even comprehend that.

But if you brought them to a jury trial today, they would understand it perfectly as what they intended in the Seventh. He then describes how the Founders would see jury service as being just as important as military service in guarding freedom.

After that, he reads the list of names of those who have died fighting for our country in the past week.

Nobody tries to get out of jury duty in his court.

I despise it but I take it as my civic duty. Doesn’t help that I live in a small parish as a newcomer so I never know anyone.

In a word, frickno, but it’s our civic duty, so I attend when summoned. Never been picked, and at this point probably never will.

Never served and almost certainly never will, no attorney is going to pick another lawyer for a jury.

I always wanted to see behind the curtain though. I have watched well over 100 mock juries deliberate my cases but I am convinced a real jury has a different feel and process. I have talked to a lot of jurors afterward but I know I am not getting the full picture.

Every fricking time I vote I get a subpoena for jury duty. I loathe it and do everything possible to get rejected if I get all the way to the jury box for vois dire. I appreciate that it’s my “civic duty”, but I’ve done it enough now. It’s someone else’s turn.

I got 1 summons and got picked that 1 time. I enjoyed it. Was a quick trial for possession of heroin with intent to distribute . Found lady guilty. Gave her 10 years probation.

It's AN IMPORTANT civic duty so I take it seriously. Anyone that doesn't is an un-American POS.

Hate it. I have way way way more important things to do in my day. Now, once I’m retired and need something to do, sure sign me up.

Has anyone ever been indicted for ignoring their civil duty?

It happens. I personally know three Louisiana lawyers who have served on juries in state and federal courts. One served on a civil jury and, later, on a criminal jury. The others were on criminal cases. I'm sure there are many more examples than the few where I just happen to know the people and heard about it.

And the lawyers don't necessarily "pick" the jurors. They get to challenge potential jurors for cause, which challenge may be denied, or use a peremptory strike to kick them out of the pool. But once the lawyers run out of strikes, the ones who are left sitting there will make up the jury. So the lawyers really get to "unpick" people and then take who is left.
