Admittedly, I can’t stand John Bernthal though, so that may have something to do with it.

If I’m enjoying this show very much do y’all think I should watch The Wire?

For sure. The Wire is a bit slower and more methodical with a focus on different aspects of the city each season but so far this has almost been The Wire: Addendum

I remember years ago I started watching it but thought it was kinda boring, if I recall correctly.

Tried to watch this the other night. When it came on, it was dubbed over in Spanish. Check my settings, set to English. Get out of the show, click again to watch, still Spanish. So I close the app completely and restart. Episode 1 starts where I left off, about 30-45 sec. in, and it's in English, yay, so I rewind to beginning. Somehow it went back to being dubbed in Spanish.

I like the show so far. Yes, the actress playing DOJ Steele is pretty awful, but that's my only real complaint. Sgt Jenkins is such a douche, but Jon Bernthal nails the character.

I’m watching episode 2 now, and holy shite the acting in this is fricking terrible. Bad bad. There is some solid acting but most of it is just plain awful. The DOJ chick, Marlo, the Asian cop, the FBI chick interviewing the Asian cop who wrote the report on gondo, Gondo, the rapper dude, etc. It’s like everybody is just reading their lines off the page instead of actually acting.

That being said, I’m digging the show so far.

The Wire is a top 2-3 show for me, so I’ve been enjoying this so far. I also just watched the HBO documentary “Slow Hustle” which goes into Det Sean Suiter (Actor playing him played Marlo). Very interesting doc and I recommend it if anyone is enjoying this, but I wouldn’t advise someone to watch it yet if they don’t want spoilers for this show.

Being a former cop, I’m not a huge fan of the anti-police slant this show and the doc both tend to have at times, but I also understand it because these dudes were extremely corrupt so frick them.

I haven’t watched this yet but how is Marlo so bad in this versus his Wire performance?

I’m not sure. His facial expression never changes and his dialogue sounds like he’s reading it off a page. Very little emotion (if any) and he’s just sort of there. His character doesn’t feel genuine at all.

Just my $0.02.

I’ve heard the same critiques from others. It’s just strange that he was so bad in this because he’s a guy with real acting experience before The Wire and someone who has gotten decent roles since.

I’m really enjoying the show

The wire nostalgia all over the place

Bernthal has an amazing switch he turns on in a lot of movies and shows where he just snaps and gets wild .

Interesting dude. He went to the Sidwell Friends school, studied acting at Harvard, and played pro baseball in Russia.

He might be just playing to the actual character.

I watched the HBO documentary on his character for context and it seems like that detective was just a very quiet, unassuming guy with 5 kids who wasn't particularly competent at his job and (without spoiling) winds up in a somewhat ambiguous situation that can't easily be explained. In other words we don't really know if he's good, evil or simply a victim.

I can see how trying to capture that would be seen as bad acting. It will also be interesting to see how the show handles his character going forward.
