Anyone have any insight into the details of why residential windows are taking so long right now? Preferably someone in the industry - not looking for "everything in the supply chain is slow right now" type answers

Short term supply throttle to spike prices, then keep prices high while gradually restoring supply.

It's something that is actually being affected by Global Warming. Windows are made out of glass which as we know is made out of sand. Every year we are losing more and more of our coastline to rising sea levels. This results in an ever decreasing supply of sand. It's simple economics.

Commercial GC here, glazing just got pushed back until august on a car dealership that we are building.. ordered it about 6 months ago to.

There’s a guy lives near me in Grant parish building a house.Couldn’t get windows,ended up driving to New Mexico to get what he needed.

Tons of home remodels and new construction to go along with the supply chain issues. Friends have had to wait for months for new windows. Hot tubs were an issue too.

Petroleum by products shortages.
Vinyl, plastics, roofing shingles, etc.
The list goes on. This is a fallout from shutting everything down in 2020. We refined less crude oil but people kept consuming products.
The system is playing "catch-up" but it may take years to catch back up.
2 weeks to flatten the curve!

Then I don't know what to tell you. Demand is outpacing supply. It's pretty much that simple. I'm supplying more glass to my customers than I was pre-covid, but there's even more demand now. Window companies are operating as fast as they can, but when you receive two orders for every one order you complete, then lead times are obviously going to increase.

We just finished building last month. Our windows took about 6 months from when we ordered.

Got my Pella windows for our remodel sitting in my garage. They go in tomorrow. I think we ordered them in Late Oct, and we've had them since early Jan. Been waiting on good weather.

not just windows. commercial wood doors are 5 months. hollow metal has gotten better though, but still about 4 months

Where are you located? Is it a hurricane-resistant curtainwall and have custom doors? Anything special about the glass make-up (structural lamination/color/etc)? Those are the only things I've really seen pushed back, and even then, not that much. Your basic storefront and curtainwall has seen some increases in lead times, but not as much as what you are experiencing.
