Who had a better career, better catalog of music, The Eagles or Aerosmith?

Random question, I know. This was inspired by a conversation I had at the bar last night that started because The Big Lebowski and spiraled out of control.
I don’t really love either band, but I had to give the nod to Aerosmith. At least they rocked out, especially in the 70’s. A google search show only (1) #1 song for Aerosmith but a slew of top 40’s. In contrast the Eagles had (5) #1’s but only a handful of other “hit” songs. I enjoy the harmonies of the Eagles, but they’re otherwise pretty boring. Give me the Aerosmith of Sweet Emotion and Mama Kin fame. Discuss

Aerosmith was a beast in the 70s. I'm going with them.

Do the Eagles have a Roller Coaster?

much like the meme of how nickleback is "like omg the worst band EVAR", TBL has made a generation of people hate the eagles for literally no reason at all aside from trying to get a chuckle from friends for quoting a comedy movie. The eagles are a damn good band with some great music across multiple styles.
As to your question, that's hard to answer since both have a frickton of songs with a good handful of hits. I personally prefer the eagles but both have their place. I think part of hte reason I sour a bit on aerosmith is that classic radio has tabbed about 4 of their songs to play on repeat over and over for eternity.

70s Aerosmith vs. 70s Eagles straight up - I think Aerosmith wins.
But, if we're talking entire career, Aerosmith takes a big hit because of their 80s and 90s output and probably makes it a push.

In the US, Eagles: Their Greatest Hits record (1971-1975) is the biggest selling album ever. Officially it has been certified at 38 Million copies (4 Million MORE than Thriller). It is the third best selling album in the world and largest selling Greatest Hits album.
Aerosmith's Greatest Hits (1980, so pre 80s songs) has sold 12 Million in the US
Eagles Greatest Hits Vol. 2 has sold 11M in the US.
Hotel California has sold 26 Million and is listed as the third best selling album ever in the US.
No other Aerosmith album has reached 10M in the US.
While Aerosmith as a band has been able to be stable for more years and release more albums than Eagles, I gotta give this to Eagles.

Sales is never a metric that I use to convince someone of the superiority of something unless I’m talking about business. When it comes to art, even consumer art, it’s an individual experience. For me, I prefer Aerosmith’s music overall to The Eagles.

The Eagles sucked after One of these Nights.
Aerosmith sucked after Rocks.
So I'm not sure.

Why would Aerosmith take a hit for their 80s and 90s output? Done With Mirrors, the Run D.M.C. collab, Permanent Vacation and Pump all came during the 80s. What did the Eagles do in the 80s? fricking nothing, that's what. In the 90s, Aerosmith continued making platinum records and winning Grammies. The Eagles did one cash cow tour and then went back to hating and suing each other. I think Aerosmith wins this, and it's not close.

The Eagles, up to their Long Run album were certainly more commercially successful. Aerosmith, with the addiction issues weren't very creative from 80-84ish but thanks to Run-DMC, they made a comeback. The Eagles with the Hotel California personnel were a great harmony group but also a great rock band. Don Felder and Joe Walsh are terrific guitarists...Give "Teenage Jail" a listen on "The Long Run"...

Well, it is called show BUSINESS.
Sales is a pretty good indication of how the public received both bands music. Being the highest selling record of ALL TIME in the US is a pretty impressive metric.
Sure you may prefer the music of Aerosmith to Eagles. There's nothing wrong with that, but your preference is a weaker metric for overall evaluation of a career/catalog.
Unless you wish to get into actual analysis of what may make one group's music "better" than the other's (eg, harmonic, melodic, orchestrational- which I am willing and prepared to do), sales is a about as good as you are going to get when evaluating a "career".

I tend to agree fwiw.
The Eagles we're much better musicians. Actually as far as rythym guitarists go, Glen Frey was also pretty damned good.

I'm not crazy about the Eagles but Aerosmith sucks arse, so I'll go with the Eagles.

Because their 80s and 90s output was pure garbage. They recorded Diane Warren songs. What else needs to be said?

There's a handful of good songs from that period, but most of it pales in comparison to their 70's tracks. If I named my top 10 favorite Aerosmith, odds are 8/10 were recorded prior to 1980.

Lol, of course it wasn't pure garbage. They put out some decent music in the 80s. Some cheese, but that was the 80s music scene and it was always fun. They recorded one Diane Warren song, I Don't Want To Miss A Thing, and it was their only number one hit. Because it's a great song. It's not like she isn't a tremendous songwriter, with nine number ones and 32 top tens. You might not like their music, but they kicked the shite out of the Eagles in the time frame given.

Pretty easy to do when the Eagles weren't even recording. Don't make me defend the Eagles.
You think that What It Takes is a great song and that Diane Warren is a "tremendous" songwriter. We'll never agree on this. She represents the very worst of what 80s and 90s pop music had to offer.
But go ahead and tell me how absolutely terrible songs like We Built This City, Nothing's Going To Stop Us, Look Away, and Because You Loved me were great songs and massive hits.
