Tell me about 45-70 Gov

This is just such a beautiful gun. It’s the new Ruger Marlin 1895 45-70 Gov. but other than it’s looks, I know nothing about it. Can someone clue me in before I impulse buy a gun I won’t enjoy shooting?
I want a lever action rifle. Just because. Maybe to shoot some hogs with but thatd be the extent of my hunting. And I have a sentimental affinity for Marlin Bc I grew up shooting my dad’s old Marlin .22.
Anyone have experience with a gun like this, and is 45-70 miserable to shoot? How does the recoil compare to .308?

I have a single shot cva with a heavy bergara barrel. It's not bad at all to shoot. Hornady lever revolution bullets are super accurate at 100 yds. I want a lever in 45-70, that one looks awesome.

The new Marlin 1895 SBL is a looker.

I have a tc encore in 45-70 and it’s a thumper not unbearable but you know you shot it . I have three marlin 30-30s all pre Remington and I love the cartridge and the platform. Unless you are dead set on hunting dinosaurs (marlin catalog showed t-Rex as appropriate species) then I would look at a 30-30 or even 44mag lever gun instead of the 45-70.
Not sure how this year pans out but I have not seen a 45-70 bullet on a shelf in 1.5yrs and even then they are pricey compared to 30-30, 44mag.
As for recoil here’s from chuck hawks which is a good reference for recoil in pounds using the hardest recoiling of the listed caliber.
45-70- 37lbs
308- 17lbs
30-30- 13lbs.

Love the gun.
Killed a buck at 150 with a Hornady round. Hit metal plates at 200 with it but I wouldn’t hunt at that distance.
Killed a few others with it. Great gun.

I wouldn't say miserable, but it does kick a lot more, and costs more to shoot. It isn't a range toy for someone who doesn't reload.
Cool thing about 45-70 is it can be reloaded to .45 colt levels with cast bullets for cheap.

Different round and model, but my old Marlin in 3030 is extremely fun to shoot. Love a lever action, as for recoil I can't imagine that round being too bad or comparable to a bolt action .308 but maybe I'm wrong. Then again I've never really cared about recoil too much.
ETA: apparently it does kick harder than a .308 is what the consensus in the thread is. Interesting, but I would imagine the ammo might be pricey.

I have a Marlin JM guide gun in .45/70 with a Leupold VX3 1.5x6 on it that I hunt with. I also have a Henry single shot in .45/70 with the same scope for black powder season.
I do not plink with either, too expensive and not fun for that purpose.
Big difference in lower velocity rounds vs. higher velocity rounds as far as recoil goes, but not really bad. Not as sharp, seems like more of a hard push.
Very accurate round - I keep my distance under 150 yds. when hunting. Very hard hitting, but not a 200+ yd. round. I use custom rounds from Precision One Ammo - 300gr./2000 fps.

I have a 45.70 CVA for primitive season. Have killed around a dozen deer with it. Great round but it thumps on recoil. I had a Marlin model 1895 I sold at the Wanamaker show in Tulsa 4 years ago for $500. Wish I could have that one back. Killed a few hogs with it. Great gun. Ruger quality should make this a great one. Buy if it hits your fancy.

Very limited range and kicks like an effing mule. I wouldn't spend much on one.

I would be patient, ruger will roll out more caliber options in lever action as they can. I have no idea why they chose 45-70 as the first one but whatever
If you need/want a lever now look at Henry.
That ruger looks incredible though I’d be tempted to wait

Kicks like a 12 ga with 3.5 #4 mags, best comparison I can give.

45-70 is a dumb round to shoot in 2022. The only exception might be as insurance in Alaska.
