Surprisingly small college venues

Watched a little of a UTSA game on ESPN+ the other day and was surprised how small the arena is. Saw a little of Rice playing on youtube this afternoon and their arena didn't look much bigger.

Neither of those surprise me. Rice has small enrollment and UTSA is a commuter school.

I'm sure a lot of sidewalk sports fans are shocked when they first learn how much Cameron Indoor holds.

Oklahoma's arena is pretty small

Notre Dame plays at the Joyce Center which is under 10k capacity. Georgia Tech I believe is under 9k and Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto is barely over 7k.

Fertitta Center at UH is 7k
But I think OP is thinking arenas that are like 4k
Tudor Fieldhouse at Rice is 5k

Cameron Indoor Stadium

I've always found it unusual that major college football stadiums dwarf most every NFL stadium.

Lloyd Noble is actually a bigger venue. I have been in there for Duke, KU, UNLV with it packed to the concourse.
It was built to be a multi purpose facility. I have seen lots of concerts from 78 to 89.
It's just poorly designed in today's culture of a arena being designed for a single sport.
OU has themselves backed into a corner. Blake Griffin built a new training center that is attached.
Yes, the LNC sucks.

Gallagher-Iva and Noble both surprised me in size first times I went there
I liked LNC during the Bliss-Tubbs era
One that surprised me on how small it was though was Tad Pad first time I went there. There’s no way it held 8,500 people.

Wasn’t there talks about a new arena being built in conjunction with the City of Norman? I remember them talking about it being used for OU basketball and other local high school teams. Also competing with the arena in Downtown OKC for events.

Tubbs - "Please refrain from throwing items on the court....no matter how bad the officiating is"
Not exactly sure what he said when they handed him the microphone during the game, but it was something like that. Seems like they gave him a technical foul afterwards.

Young S hit 5 threes in a playoff game in there

Requiem for The Pit...
It was the second oldest on-campus arena before it was demolished in 2011.
Held 9,000 people.

That's actually pretty cool looking.

It still exists. Oregon should play a game there every year. Much cooler experience than Tat toilet bowl (aka Matthew Knight Arena with its ugly floor).

Yes, you are correct. There became a pissing contest over funding. The University and the powers are looking at options.

Not going to lie. These places look like they would be a fun spot to watch a game to decide a conference title.

Didn’t know that nickname. I always knew it as Mac Court.
