IDK man. If there's one thing harder to make than electricity it's probably hydrogen.

That would be a game changer if they can figure out the logistics end.

From what I've seen... I wouldn't underestimate Elon Musk. Dude had manufacturing and supply chain stuff in place before some problems/inventions had even been solved.

Hydrogen ICE seems to be the cosmopolitan thing so far this year.

Airbus is going all in on hydrogen gas-turbine engines. They are even planning to produce their own engines.

Uh no. Also, Musk literally laughed at the notion of a hydrogen powered engine. Literally a punchline to him.

Edit: here’s the YouTube link of him explaining why, scientifically: LINK

Or, you could use electricity to make hydrogen via electrolyzers...

Surprised he thinks that way given how solid rocket boosters use hydrogen, CO2 etc. Hope Toyota proves him wrong.

I was working with some hydrogen fuel cell UPS systems at NASA.

A 30kW system wasn’t small.

It takes more energy to produce hydrogen than you get out of it.

Doubtful. If you're carrying around a tank of hydrogen, it's more efficient to use a fuel cell to power electric motors than it is to burn the hydrogen in a combustion engine. Also the infrastructure to store and transport it would be very expensive.

I would imagine the challenge here would be how to prevent massive explosions when accidents happen.

The only application for which this makes sense is to use the excess (otherwise wasted) energy from offshore wind to produce hydrogen as grid storage. If you're generating more electricity just to produce hydrogen, then you're wasting energy in the conversion when you could store it in a battery and drive a motor with it. Then you lose more energy when you either combust it or run it through a fuel cell.

If you think the colossal amount of investment required to just handle a 30% EV market, which is what media's think is feasible in the next 10 years....Go look up the infrasture investment amount for Hydrogen. ITS INSANE.

Hydrogen has to be kept at -435F to stay liquid, which it has to stay at in storage.

This is unfeasible.

They have been working on that in Southern California for 9 -10 year (Toyota). Problem is getting enough fueling stations in the areas where the cars are located. The people that were driving them only leased them at the time to give them feedback on their products.

It's a challenge just to keep hydrogen from leaking out of a tank.

Just get some hydrogen peroxide and take the peroxide out. Pretty simple.
