They could be winning in some battles

US plans to allocate nearly $885mln to counteract Russian media
quote:
The US Senate plans to allocate $884.7 million to the US Agency for Global Media from the State Department’s fiscal year 2023 budget to counteract Russia in the information sphere in Eastern European countries, according to a Senate Committee on Appropriations’ press statement released on Tuesday.

The money is meant to strengthen the USAGM’s mission to inform and consolidate audiences across the globe in support of democracy and freedom, including new tools to keep Russia from circumventing broadcasting bans in Eastern Europe.

The translation from the original Russian needs work.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 22 December 2022
On 19 December 2022, President Putin travelled to Minsk to hold talks with President Lukashenko of Belarus. The presidents' discussion included talk of a 'single defence space.
Although Russia and Belarus prominently publicise Russian units' deployments into Belarus, the armed forces of Belarus have likely recently taken on a significant, but more discreet role in training thousands of newly mobilised Russian reservists.
The likely use of Belarusian instructors is an attempt to partially remediate the lack of Russian military trainers, many of whom are deployed in Ukraine or have become casualties. Although Russia and Belarus have an extensive background of military co-operation, the training of mobilised Russian personnel by Belarusians represents a role reversal. Belarusian forces have traditionally been considered by Russia as inferior to Russian forces and their employment as trainers is an indication of overstretch within the Russian military system.

Eventually Russia is going to pull together a Russia style attack with a shite ton of artillery followed right up with a lot of armor.
Russia has a ton of warehoused tanks and artillery. however, barrels of both have a very limited lift time with respect to the number of rounds they can fire. i have read reports that the russians are already using tanks with smooth barrels (not rifled like traditional artillery) as artillery pieces. Tank barrels have an even shorty life span (max number of rounds)
And Russia is not very adept are maintenance and repairs as it is.
Lastly, Russia lacks a proper supply chain to mount another major offensive.

Girkin's current thoughts:
I don't think Girkin will be invited to Prigozhin's dacha on Jan 7 for Christmas unless he is the entertainment in shackles.

That’s been the norm for tank main guns for decades both in the East & West. The last rifled main gun we used was the 105mm used on the M60 and original M1.
When the M1A1 was introduced in the late 80s, it came with a smoothbore 120mm main gun. The British Challenger and German Leopard II use the same gun as the Abrams.
As for the Russians, they’ve been using a smoothbore 125mm even longer. It was first used on the T-64 in the late 60s.

Smoothbore tank guns have a far longer life than rifled tank main guns.

Tass RUSSIAN NEWS AGENCY
The only report is from TASS....With that said the only difference in their referenced material is $24.7 million dollars from the last FY budget. This is trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill because they are using the entire US Agency for Global Media's budget as the reference point when only a fraction of the funds would be used for what the article is referencing.

Range is the big issue with tank rounds vs artillery rounds

US Col R. Black: Battle Lost For Ukrainians - Their Losses At Bakhmut Are Massive & They Have Seen Nothing Yet
quote:
"The battle for the Ukrainians has been lost and the war has already been decided," said retired US Army Special Forces and Marines Colonel Richard Black in his double intervention.
quote:
As he pointed out during a conference of the Schiller Institute, the battle in Artyomovsk is disastrous for the Armed Forces of Ukraine without counting the fourfold increase in the troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation by the beginning of 2023.

"Ukrainian troops are being thrown into a death trap in Bakhmut by the thousands and it seems they have no solution.

Black noted that the number of dead Ukrainian soldiers is staggering and the population of the country will not allow to replace the losses in manpower.

The conflict is lost, the colonel concluded.

The casualties for Ukraine in Bakhmut are high, but the casualties for Russia are higher. Ukraine’s population is smaller than Russia’s but it is more motivated. Russia’s troops will mutiny before Ukraine runs out of troops. This is terribly bad Russian misinformation and propaganda.
