Recently purchased a camp in shell beach and plan on buying a boat to keep there. I’m a bass fisherman with a 21 ft boat but want a separate rig. Does anyone that fishes the area have an opinion on what size boat to get. I would imagine 90 percent of our time will be spent inshore going after bass/reds but ideally would have the capability to fish open water/even chandeleur islands if weather permits. I was thinking a 24 ft bay boat would be a good choice but would I be severely compromising marsh fishing out there?

Heck yes she will, if she stays on Pinterest and not on plane.

24 bay boat? Not at all a problem inshore but a 21 from that location and majority inshore would do just fine.

Only reason I’d say 24 or up is Borgne can turn feisty in minutes. Only downfall is you might have to live without hitting every pond for redfish but there are too many options to scout fins for this to be a negative

If you want to make the run to Chandelier Islands or anywhere in Breton Sound, I would go with a 24’ bay boat of you preference. Lake Borgne can get bad, but most of Biloxi Marsh/Shell Beach/MRGO can be done with a smaller boat.

24 if you ever want to go offshore, and as others said Borgne can turn in a flash.

Truth is 21 or 24, those bay boats draft the same, so the same small ponds are generally accessible with either. if a pond is too shallow for a 24, it will be too shallow for a 21, in my opinion

Meh the 21’ is plenty honestly.

I take my 21 Kenner out to chandy all the time.

We run a 24' Privateer and fish both in/out. Certainly does not compromise any marsh fishing opportunities

I have a 21 and do fine. Can navigate a a huge amount of area from Borne to the Gulf even if it's a little windy. Going across Borne or to islands probably a no go if it's real windy or rough but plenty to fish in between.

22 ft. Twin Vee gets us where ever we want to go near Shell Beach.

I don't know why they quit building these. A great utilitarian boat for LA. fish the marsh or fish snapper on a good day.

I would get a 22ft. bay boat. It will do fine in the marsh and can be taken to the Chandeleur Islands weather permitting. You have to pick your days to go to the Chandeleurs even with a 24 ft. bay boat. When you pass Comfort Island, you have about 20 miles of open water to get to Curlew Island.

I have a 24’ Haynie H.O. I may be looking to sale. Shallow draft to get in ponds and dry ride in open water.

If you plan to fish Lake Borgne a lot and go to the islands a decent amount, buy at least 24’. I spent years fishing the area with a 22’ and would never go smaller than 24’ again if I were buying a bay boat. You can do all of the above in a smaller boat but 24’ will do it faster, more comfortably, and safer.

Not knowledgeable enough in the bay boat world to be familiar with Haynie. Do u have specs and an idea of what you looking to sell it for?

Breton Sound can get really nasty in a hurry. If you want to fish the Chandeleurs and then hit snapper out in the gulf from Shell Beach I would go with a min 27 ft.

Well I really appreciate the info thus far. Seems 24 fr boat would give me the ability to fish the lakes relatively safely while not compromising the marsh fishing too much. Long offshore runs have a chance to get squirrelly with any boat in the size range I would inshore fish with. I guess 24 ft may be best. The camp has 3 boat lifts so I could always buy another flats type boat down the road if I want to go in really skinny water

Since you are keeping the 21’, get something with a v and higher gunnels 20’ - 24’. Islands, rigs and Biloxi casinos more accessible.

A 24' bay boat is a great thing to have around there. You'll have much more range than with a smaller boat and won't lose much if any marsh fishing capability.

I've burned almost 70 gallons of gas in one day fishing out of campos before.

Id look at a 21' frontier as well though, great general purpose boat.
