I like screaming and all that but the flat out growling, just can't get into it. I prefer to hear a real voice than the grating of vocal chords.

Maybe just an accent here or there with some low key growling, but you don’t want it to overpower the song.

Everything is good in moderation, but has diminishing returns the more it’s utilized.

I’m with you. It’s awful. I prefer good old flowing classic rock like Van Halen and AC/DC to metal.

Deathcore and death metal seem to be dominating the scene right now. I love bands that mix in growling and clean signing

Yep. After years of mostly underground growling scene, it’s finally getting its due. It was about time.

Here's my take on growlers. Some metal is more monotone but in a lot of metal, regardless of genre, you have a lot of stuff happening musically - dynamics in varying ways of melody, harmony, rhythm. I'm ok with growls being used as part of the vocal palette but when it's the only thing it's monotonous. It just feels musically incompetent to me that you can have these complex, layered musical parts and then on top of that you put such a relatively homogenous, unchanging sound. I realize that growls do have some dynamics, modulations on some level but it's a much smaller range.

So I like for example, Kamelot or Epica which come from a cleaner start but have incorporated some growls where it makes sense for a particular character in a song, or a musical tone. Or bands coming from a heavier style like Enslaved or Scar Symmetry, who layer in both cleans and growls.

It’s 60% lyrics, 40% instrumentals for me. Growling adds little to nothing and can detract from an otherwise good song.

I forgot to mention that when you can't possibly understand a word being growled/screamed, what's the damn point of lyrics? Ok, maybe some emotion... but there's no variation, just aggression. That's boring.

Yeah, Cookie Monster vocals are definitely not my thing. The only band I've ever come across that uses that vocal style that I enjoy is Bolt Thrower.

Just like singers, there are good growlers and bad ones. Some music just calls for it and the growling adds a much needed dimension of bleakness, darkness, and desperation. If you can listen to Blackwater Park by Opeth and not get chills when Mikael Akerfeldt screams “lepers coil neath the trees” then you may need to check your pulse.

I'm not a big fan of growling, but sometimes the music is so awesome that it makes me forget all about the vocals.

Pariah - Lamb of God is a good example.

I like any metal with a melodic chorus. Growing on verses is cool.

100% depends on how it is used in the song. If a song mixes cleans and growls I can stomach it a lot better. I song that is 100% low growls will grind on my nerves. Interesting that a song like To the Hellfire by Lorne Shore is 100% extreme vocals but I can enjoy it as it switches the type of exreme vocals. If you want to for real give growls a chance to grow on you try Jinjer. Many have found Jinjer as the go to band to become accepting of growls. Tatiana is an amazing vocalist and her switch between growls and cleans is amazing. Here try this one out and see what you think:
