Mardi Gras - Visitors Cancelling?

We're within a month of Mardi Gras now and is Mardi Gras attendance poised to be disappointing? I ask this because of what's happening with some hotels.
In the last week I've had two local New Orleans hotel groups send me emails about booking your Mardi Gras reservation now. These are hotels that are located in the French Quarter and along major parade routes that are actually trying to entice people to book.
Sure the prices are insane (all over $325/night with 3 night minimums at least) but the fact they have any availability at all is telling. These are hotels that a few years ago, if you called within a few months of Mardi Gras asking about availability, they would utterly laugh at you. These are hotels that had lists they would call as they would have the same people book year after year almost a year in advance.
I'll go on record and say I'll believe the major krewes are rolling when I see it. With that said I don't think that's it. I also don't think it's Omicron. Yeah people who cancelled a month ago might have cancelled because of Omicron but not now.
So what do you think it is? Covid? Crime in the city? The economy and inflation? The mask requirement?

You are far overstating the year in advance sellouts.
If that was the case they would raise rates even higher

COVID doesn’t have a damm thing to do with it. Would you bring your family to NOLA for Mardi Gras. shite their killing people everyday. How do you think it’s going to be with a bunch of drunk people walking around that are clueless where they are walking at

I've seen these hotels for years and I've never seen availability at the hotels I'm mentioning this close to Mardi Gras. They are all typically booked up at least 6 months in advance. One has availability and it's right on St. Charles. Another is right on Canal and the other hotel group has several French Quarter hotels.

just checked my Hilton honors account. plenty of rooms that weekend. interesting. Can get a one bed suite at the Roosevelt for $800 a night. pretty unheard of this close in. usually over a grip for a room like that this time of year.

That's what I'm wondering. The only thing that will make this city clean itself up is if the tourists finally have enough and stop visiting. Could we be seeing the start of that? People finally getting fed up with going to a place for a vacation and having to worried about getting car jacked, robbed or killed?

Hilton is one of the ones I've checked as I'm always with Hilton honors due to work. Several hotels available which in years past you would absolutely never see.

I promise you, you are wrong. You may be thinking of a specific hotel in that situation but a month out most hotels have a fair number of rooms to move for MG every year.

Last year Toya shut down all bars and restaurants the week of Fat Tuesday. My guess is people still remember that and weren’t going to spend a ton of money just for that count to pull a shutdown again.

Visitors aren't canceling because most of the hotels have no cancellation policies for that weekend.
Now, are bookings down? Of course they are. And rather than lower prices, the hotels at this point are just dealing with lower occupancy.
When so many hotels have no cancellation policies... would you trust that the city will have parades?
I think the parades will roll but I would not bet $325/night on it, at this time.

And I'm telling you I've talked to 7 different hotels (I work for a technology company that develops systems for a lot of hospitality companies including hotels) that have flat out admitted they've never had availability like this a month out from Mardi Gras. Either they are typically sold out or they are much closer to being sold out. One hotel had all of their room categories still available.
I'm not trying to say it's every hotel by any means and it could just be isolated but what I am saying is, unlike what you're trying to say, it's not normal.

I'm in the same boat and I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. I live in the Florida panhandle but I would love to come back for Mardi Gras this year. But yeah definitely not betting $325/night on it at this point. I'll admit I'm worried about crime as well with NOPD being at critically low levels.

Getting closer to an accurate answer.
Though pacing isn’t even that far off.
Was a little behind through the year, and january had some stall in pace with omicron concerns - but it’s not terribly far off. I’ll also note many hotels just had among their best nye/sugar bowls after similar set up.
The words fully non refundable have some folks holding off but it’s pretty darn close to a normal year with rooms sold, very strong rates, cancellations are not happening…. and most hotels aren’t sold out 6 months in advance normally.

I would bet $325 for one night to watch my child ride but I am not betting $325x3 like I did pre covid.
