I wish he would've been given a chance to be a primary back. When you go back and look at his stats, he always averaged around 4.5-5.0 yards per carry when healthy and the other backs struggled to average 4.0. He was underrated all around.
I think the majority of his success was due to him not being the primary back. It's cliché, but runningbacks can only take so many hits in their career. By not pounding him between the tackles 20-25 times a game, it allowed him to last longer and still have his legs underneath him.

His career was 10 years (8 in NOLA). That's not short by any means for a runningback.

That's true for his overall career, but I meant in direct comparison to the other backs in any given year. Go pick any year and compare the ypc for the backs on the team. I'm not trying to conclude anything, it's just an interesting observation looking back.

My favorite Saints player!

Brian Westbrook was up there too.

The loss of PT on the first drive of the SF playoff game cost the saints a second SB win.
Yup Whitner was on the hunt. Thinking about that hit and the bullshite that happened in the subsequent offseason still makes me sick.

I hate that Payton didn't value Pierre. It's like he's an afterthought now, but he was incredible and a chain mover.
Not a bad point. Pierre started and carried the load the last 2 or 3 games of his rookie season after Deuce was injured. He did so well that he was told to put some muscle weight on in the offseason because Deuce was nearing the end of his career and it was thought that he would take his place. Pierre actually put on about 12 lbs. during the offseason and came back jacked. Under normal circumstances Pierre probably would have been the heir to Deuce but Payton preferred running back by committee and using putting them where he could take advantage of their strengths which was actually pretty smart.

Was that the game/pass where he got knocked out in the end zone?

Right before the endzone at the 1 or 2. He was asleep before he hit the ground and "fumbled" the ball. He's my all-time favorite Saint. I hated that for him.

Mixon is the closest i've seen since.

Payton didn’t ever have an “every down back.” That extended a lot of guys’ careers, and led to some of the most prolific offenses in the league. Bruh.

We have one of the best backs in the league right now and AK has never had the full load until this past year and that was mostly due to injuries and having nobody else.
And that will likely help extend his career

Thought so. Was so pissed it wasnt a flag. Believe that was when targeting had gotten really enforced. Except that play

Pierre was one of my favorite running backs in a Saints uniform especially for an undrafted player! Dalton Hilliard was not too bad running screen passes as well. Oh wait, he went to LSU.

the Saints loved them a good ole Pierre screen on 2nd-and-10
always came through
always came through

It just feels like it was a big play every time they ran it. God they were so good at the screen game.

I have wanted LSU for years to bring him in to consult on the screen game. Never seen a team on any level so bad at it as LSU has been historically.

His ability to read blocks and react so quick and fluidly.... beautiful to behold.
