When do the DEMs/Biden get serious about some Student Loan Forgiveness?

Do they target this policy just before midterms or do they wait for 2024 when Biden will need some positive PR for the Presidential race? Or do they attempt both?

I don't think they will offer some crazy "forgive all loans" policy but some relief, say, $10-20k in relief. This actually would do a lot of good in helping the people feeling the negative effects of SLs more than cancelling all debt for everyone.

I have to imagine this is inevitable and the only reason something hasn't happened yet is they want this bullet in the chamber for emergencies.

How do you do something without doing something?

That’s what they’ll do.

Never.

You borrowed the money, you pay it back.

That's exactly how the fringe left will see a $10k forgiveness

At some point people are going to have to learn from their mistakes.

Paying tens of thousands of dollars for a degree in art history or women’s studies is going to be a harsh lesson. Let them learn it.

Seriously. If the Dems do this, it will piss me off and never vote for them for the rest of my life.

As a parent that busted arse and deferred vacations and new cars so I could put two kids through college without debt - it’s the hill I die upon.

Universities need to back student loans, not the government

They should make it dischargeable in bankruptcy like any other loan.

They want to default, then the lender can force them into bankruptcy if they don't do it themselves.

I expect they're going to trot it out just before midterms.

It won't actually do that much good. I think they ran the numbers and the 10k for each person is only a fraction for most borrowers.

We should also give out loans based on expected earnings. So, if you can make $50k coming out of college with your degree, you can take out a total of X of student loan debt.

If you can make $200k, you can take out more.

Then you shouldn’t be able to get a transcript from your school.

I expect them to dangle the carrot this year.

I don’t think they will pay all student debt because it’s just impractical. But I do think they will offer “a round of student loan forgiveness” in some amount, maybe around $25K. I think they will continue to bring it up before each election, promising “another round of student loan forgiveness” if people vote Democrat again.

I think you're wrong here. There are a TON of people who have what we would consider small amounts weighing them down. Think people who are poor and only made it a couple semesters then quit. There are TONS of these people and their loans are probably sub-$30k in most cases.

This will do very little for the art history majors walking dogs in coastal-urban areas who have 6-figures in debt.

If the dems don’t address it before the midterms then they have no shot of keeping control of Congress.

Personally I don’t want them to do it because I think people should pay their debts. However if they do get it passed then I would not complain too much if my student loans got forgiven

This White House keeps telling us that unemployment is below 4%, wages are up, and the economy is booming. If all that’s true, these people’s debts will get solved by the market.

I can't wait for some DEM shill to argue that inflation was their incredibly intelligent and secret plan to address SL debt

Means tested so it won’t help anyone who doesn’t already vote for them.
