Any stories regarding crowd noise rules?

just watching some old CFB video clips on youtube, and saw this graphic regarding crowd noise for home teams that were deemed too loud for the visiting team's offense
any old fart have stories about how ridiculous this was?
can't believe that it was only abolished in 2005-ish

It was very rarely enforced. It was a joke in the 90s and 2000s.

Main case I know about was the refs penalizing SMU in the late 70s / early 80s over their band playing too loud and that was because it ended up in a sports hall of shame book.

Bear Bryant said playing in Tiger Stadium was like playing inside a beating steel drum. The drinking age was 18, you could bring coolers into the stadium, football fandom was even more passionate and intense than now. You can't imagine the raucous atmosphere. I don't think there was anything you could do to quiet em down, it would be a disaster to even try

Did this almost happen to LSU in the 2001 Sugar Bowl against Illinois? I think the referee gave a warning and Saban had to get on the ref’s mic and say something to the crowd. Students could’ve been throwing piss balloons though. Don’t remember exactly.

The refs stopped the game and said stop pumping noise through the speakers
But there was no crowd noise being pumped through the speakers
The stadium actually got louder after that

In the 1987 Ohio State - LSU game, Buckeye QB Tom Tupa kept stepping away from center on the first play from scrimmage because the Tiger Stadium crowd was too loud for him. He was waiting for the refs to step in and throw a flag, but it never happened. The crowd just got more amped until they were finally forced to snap the ball.
That sequence was pretty awesome, especially considering it was a day game in Tiger Stadium. The full game used to be on youtube, but I could only find this clip, which is an abbreviated version of the noisy sequence

Yeah Schembechler and Harbaugh used it in Iowa City in 1985. #2 Michigan @ #1 Iowa.

Schemblecher was notorious for using that rule.
He used it in Camp Randall in 1980 to drain Wisconsin of timeouts and march down the field. (Badgers got revenge the following season upsetting #1 ranked Michigan in the opener in Madison)
He and Harbaugh again used it at Camp Randall in 1986 at a night game. Harbaugh kept pulling out from under center waving his hands to plead the with the official. Long long delay it was ridiculous.
He transferred his tricks to Gary Moeller who attempted the same thing in Camp Randall during the 1993 game. (Where the fans rushed the field and had many trampled by the fence and taken to the hospital)
It was just a ploy to piss off the other team, drain their timeouts, and take the edge off the crowd.

Ever since those games I have always hated Michigan and Harbaugh.

The Saints played the Giants in the Superdome after the rule was created for the NFL. The Dome was loud but not THAT loud but Phil Simms kept backing out of center, complaining about the noise. The Saints got penalized if I remember correctly.
Seemed like something a weasel would do. And Mark Bavaro sucks, too.
