I think Ariza and Luc would have cost an extra 40 million total or so to keep them the next year, which wouldn’t have been worth it (or made a difference as far as outcome)
The thing that was more annoying is trading away decent potential younger rotation guys and picks to get out of it when they were only a few million in it where the penalties aren’t nearly as prohibitive.
None of that is ultimately why Morey left though I don’t think

Embiid has taken “the leap”
To me he is probably the best player in the league.

Harden is still a fat piece of shite

You can’t blame harden for Paul not holding up his end of the deal. This is from CPs article from the athletic top 75 players.
CP was not taking care of himself admittedly and had to be traded for him to transform his diet. Without the wake up call. Ie trade. He admit himself he would have been out of the league.
quote:
“Is that the biggest ‘What if?'” Paul repeated a question. “I don’t think it’s a ‘What if?’ Because the one thing I do know is if that injury had not happened — then I got injured in December the next year — if those (hamstring) injuries don’t happen, I know for a fact that I’m not playing right now and enjoying myself the way I am right now.” Paul transformed his diet, learned how to better train for career longevity and says he wouldn’t still be in the league had he not received that wake-up call.

Yep. I think he moved downtown during his second year or maybe right before and his family went back to LA. First tip he was probably not sticking around for a while
He lived next door to my attorney friend. She used to see him often. Was probably his frick house

The Rockets never gave up anything of value to stay under the tax.

They went to 6 games with a full strength Golden State that year.
Guys like James Ennis or Melton aren’t flashy but they’re a hell of a lot better than Iman Shumpert, who was playing serious minutes in that Golden State series

If I was a sports agent I wouldn’t recommend my clients sign with any state that has a state income tax unless the salary to live in an SIT was outrageous (relatively speaking).
A lot of Panthers and Hornets players live out in Tega Cay just across the state line because of the tax benefits (oddly enough their state income tax rate is now lower than ours, but their other taxes are ridiculous and the cost of living when you travel a couple of miles changes pretty noticeably).

I thought he bought Cuttino Mobley's house in Royal Oaks.
He did and he also bought a bad arse house in Rivercrest in West Houston.

He was the center of the universe in Houston and now he's the #2 guy on NY's #2 team.

Yeah, I disagree. Shumpert is just one example I pulled off the top my head but he was a black hole and shot like 33% from the field during his time on the Rockets. The Rockets lost every game in that specific series by less than 5 or 6 points if I remember right. Their failures around the margins of the roster is a major reason why they never got over the hump those two years
There is also no way of knowing the deals that were passed on because of the artificial cap ownership placed on spending.

James Ennis was frustrating as hell on the Rockets. He was not good for them at all even though his stats look okay on paper. Ennis’ on/off in Houston were -6.2 in the regular season and in the playoffs in Philly he was a -2.9. In the playoffs, Shumpert was +2.6.
And I’m not some Shumpert fan… I’m just saying the difference between beating the Warriors and not beating the Warriors had nothing to do with Ennis and Shumpert. Neither of them were making a difference.
The real problem that year was Chris Paul was mediocre. He was not even close to 2017-18 Chris Paul. The difference between 2017-18 Chris Paul and 2018-19 Chris Paul is the answer to the 5 or 6 point gap in the Warriors series.
