Managing Winter Weeds in Lawns - LSU AgCenter

This brief article from the LSU AgCenter Cooperative Extensin Service Managing Winter Weeds in Lawns was received in my inbox this morning.
Now is a good time to be looking for and controlling lawn burweed (sticker weed) in the lawn. Looks like small carrot plants.
There are usually multiple posts in late spring on how to get rid of this weed, particularly from those with kids who like to run around barefoot, but by then the weed is mature and has produced stickers (seeds) and it can difficult to control. It’s fairly easy to control with herbicides now when it’s small/young before it matures and produces stickers.
Also a good time to be looking for and spraying young/immature annual bluegrass (Poa annua) weeds in the lawn - it’s another weed that much more difficult to kill when mature and producing seedheads.

Have you started using the winter weed cocktail?

I was going to come ask about this today. I was clearing out a flower bed and saw the first burweed plant. I hate those damn things. Ill be spraying it down now!
Thanks Crawdude!

Is it safe to broadcast MSM right now or only spot treat?

I’m about to mix some Weed Free Zone, without Atrazine, to spray winter weeds popping up in landscape beds - I was remiss in not laying down pre-emergent herbicide in the landscape beds though I heavy mulch the beds for weed suppression but some weeds always break through.
I’m not seeing much in the way of winter weeds in the lawn as I did apply Specticle pre-emergent in early October - happy with what I’m seeing so far as this is the first time I’ve used Specticle for fall application.
I’m planning to apply late winter lawn pre-emergent, likely Prodiamine, in the lawn in the next few weeks - in the first week of February.
This been an unseasonably warm winter - in that context, need to look closely at and re-evaluate the “normal” recommended application dates.

It’s safe to broadcast MSM or spot spray now - try to do it on a day/afternoon when temps exceed 60 F to maximize herbicide update.

Same here, not seeing much winter weeds after Specticle but do have some.

Specticle is legit and worth it.

I was about to say this has thrown everything off...I actually mowed last week as the grass itself took off the weeks around Christmas when we had highs in the 80's.
I've sprayed Clegg's winter cocktail once in November and once in December and it's been holding up well. There is such a thing as over spraying this time of year correct? I was thinking about holding off on spraying until mid to late February.

I'll be following along since I did Specticle in Late September. I guess I need to be ready at the end of this month?

I put out some annual ryegrass, in my Zoysia, to help cover some muddy bare areas. Any way to treat weeds without nuking the rye?

I would say so and/or just monitor soil temperature LINK and when the 5 day average is near 55 F apply pre-emergent - of course it’s above 55 F now in Baton Rouge area - but then you still have the efficacy of your late Sept Specticle application - but I’m sure it’s efficacy rapidly waning after 4 months. I applied Specticle maybe a couple weeks after you that’s why I was thinking applying pre-emergent the first week of Feb.
I prefer to err on the side of applying a little too early vs a little too late.
I usually try to shoot an email to Dr. Ron Strahan LSU AgCenter to get his recommendation on whether or not adjusting application pre-emergent herbicide dates are warranted during “unusual” seasons -I’ll probably do this later this week or early next week. I’ll update when I do this and hear back from him.

I think you want to spray weeds when present as long as you are following label directions as to frequency of application - certainly do so while they are young/immature and go to seed. I my opinion you could spray again now if you think it’s warranted, and possibly change the product used - perhaps MSM Turf - assuming it’s broadleaf weeds you are targeting and not annual bluegrass.

Weed Free Zone (Speedzone) and Trimec is labeled for broadleafweed control on perennial rye and Zoysia but annual rye is not listed. I truly don’t know.
ronk might be able to shed better light on this - I recall he did answer a similar question a few months ago.

Trimec is rye is the way to go. It’s actually my preferred way to go in all grass types during cold months due to its quick knockdown. Won’t do anything for grassy weeds though.

You’ll need to be ready to treat poa in the next month or so. Specticle is the best pre em on the market but even it will breakdown.

Where did everyone buy their Specticle from?

Site One for me.
Same
Specticle Flo (liquid spray) for me, not granular - good bit cheaper per 1000 sq ft than the granular, but a good bit more pricey than Prodiamine or Dimension - just so that you are aware.

Yeah I had looked at it last year but the price scared me off. I wish there was a pre-emergent that was effective on sedges and kylinga.

Weed free zone in flower beds - Are you not worried about the 24D damaging the shrubs?
