We really don’t give a shite about the East or the Lower 9th. That’s the whole point of St Bernard Parish.

I’m not saying you do, I’m just saying this is why it’s going in St. Bernard and not plaquemines. It doesn’t make a ton of sense in plaquemines.

ETA: I’ve yet to hear a reasonable argument against it from St. Bernard residents. It’s always just muh way of life down here.

The SOS talking point is that those jobs aren’t going to go to St Bernard residents

Sorry if you are a member, but I have little to no trust in anything SOS is saying.

There's no reason most of those jobs would not go to those residents, unless they didn't apply for it.

And jobs may go to residents of other places who decide to move closer to work.

Plaquemines would need even more state infrastructure improvements than St. Bernard... and the state isn't committing to the infrastructure needed in St. Bernard.

What people don't want is another situation like we saw with the new airport terminal... where one government agency builds something and DOTD doesn't build the needed surrounding infrastructure until years later.

Outside of a few neighbors... the only reasonable argument is if the necessary road and rail improvements are not made. Our current road and rail network in St. Bernard can not handle the increased traffic without major improvements.

Ooops you said the quiet part out loud

If those jobs pay too much, those people won’t move here. They’ll just keep commuting from where they are currently

Maybe they'll commute from Slidell.

St Bernard has a census population of 44K, down from a peak in the 67K+ range before Katrina.

I have a feeling there aren’t a lot of workers to pick from in there given that a huge amount of the pre-Katrina residents have dispersed across the US and I don’t know the composition of who lives there now.

And infrastructure is a reasonable argument if they push that hard.

Problem is that no one seems to have a coherent message on this other than “no”.

In the last 10 years CHS’s black and Asian enrollment has doubled and the Hispanic enrollment has tripled. That should give you a clue

The SOS group has made it clear they are not interested in negotiations, or discussions, or finding ways to make this work.

They are clear, as evidenced by their lawsuit and by their public comments, they are against the port no matter what and do not want it no matter what.

So as far as they are concerned, simply saying "no" is plenty enough.

Parish is still dominated by poor and lower middle class white, but more poor minorities live here too now.

Parish is still 70% white and 21% below poverty line

so don’t you think jobs like this would be good for the parish? That’s exactly the group that will be working these most likely.

And like everyone agrees it’s not like it used to be

We need jobs that will bring the Katrina diaspora back

I’m not a member of SOS but if anyone knows, aren’t they skewing pretty old?

SOS really is dominated by the "we don't want change no matter what it is" crowd.

I predict that Orleans or Jefferson Parish will annex Plaquemines Parish within 10 years

Does St. Bernard still have a cultural center?
We use to call that the ultimate oxymoron.

Yes they do and it's a whole lot of "lifers"

Our "jobs" number isn't much below what it was pre-Katrina.

The people that left were retirees and/or were commuting. Now they are retired in St. Tammanard or commuting from St> Tammanand to the city.
