In 2022 we are awed when a product has the word max, plus, etc and will to dish out an extra 30% for a cell phone...big companies are making a killing off of us now.

You hit on an important point here. When the first few generations of a concept come out, IE the iphone, they come up with a new idea and refine it to being useful and reliable. After that, each generation is 2% faster, better, smarter, etc...

I refuse to buy a new iphone. I buy a two-generation removed reconditioned (with warranty) from ebay for $300 and it works just fine, versus the $1000+ new phone.

Family members keep asking me why I didn't buy the new one with amazing camera, faster speeds, more this, more that...

Cmon I can do emails, phone calls, facebook, convert milimeters to inches... wtf do I need all that extra crazy stuff for? Does it use better millimeters?

Looks more like Idiocracy to me.

that's not picking on IT people. it's picking on the people IT people support.

Lol no. Humans used to be problem solvers because they had to be. Now people can't figure out solutions to problems that have already been solved.

outside of the obvious problem of sin, i think this is the root of most of our unrest currently. you could rephrase it that, we've solved so many of our problems, that we have to create brand new ones to keep ourselves busy.

i'm believing more and more of the adage, "Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times."

whether it's technology in the cloud, a phone, a camera on a phone, race issues, gender issues, some people feel like we always need to be making progress.

if you had told a photographer 30 years ago, we're going to make a phone that's about the size of a deck of cards that will take better pictures and store more pictures in a year that you could have done in a life time, they wouldn't believe you. unfortunately they're going to use it to take pictures of overpriced food.

If you told a nasa scientist in the 60s that we're going to be able to outcompute everything you do in a computer smaller than a briefcase in 40 years, i doubt they would believe that.

if you told a black person in the 60s that in about 40 years a black man will be president and be mostly popular (Obama isn't my favorite, but he finished with positive approval ratings, like it or not) I doubt many would believe you. not only that, but we'll be paying thousands upon thousands of black athletes, musicians, and actors untold billions of dollars and white kids will love and worship them. They'll buy their albums, dress like them, wear their jerseys, you name it.

point is, quality of life is quantifiably better in every regard, but it will never be good enough for most of the populace. when it comes to technology and advancement, it's usually a good thing and we all benefit.

usually when it comes to the social issues, i find it to be a bad thing. there are more articles and cries of white supremacy today than there was during segregation. i'd wager that there are less than 100k actual white supremacist in the US as opposed to 50 years ago when it was actually enshrined into law.

work just moved me up to an iphone 11. i'm still not used to not having my home button and i don't really care for all the new features and size of the thing. i'd go back if the battery life was there.

peak iphone was the iphone 5. sonic of your choosing if you disagree.

It depends on how you define "smart".

Those devices are smart and easy to use, not the person. Any moron can push a button to connect and another one to play or I hope.

The point was those devices are being invented. Calling a group of people dumb has to take in consideration the top of the list - not just the bottom.

Of course not. As a whole humanity is exponentially smarter than their ancestors.

Take away our phones and our internet access, we can do nothing. People have no idea how to do anything. It must be spelled out for them. No more critical thinking or problem solving skills.
Heck, majority of this board uses "then" instead of "than".
We are the dumbest "smart" generation.

If by "dumbest group of people" you are talking about folks who get enjoyment out of jumping on the internet and spreading false info/pretending to be an insider about things such as knowing which OC LSU will hire just for attention..... Then yes.

I am old enough to have worked around several generations of technology. The average person’s ability to resolve what seem to be obvious problems has not changed much. In the 50s and 60s, 70s etc there were lots of frustrated service people that showed up to find typewriters, adding machines, TVs, etc simply “unplugged” from a wall outlet with the cord laying on the floor in plain sight.

You are a bit of a Luddite, nothing wrong with that I am too in some ways. That being said the 2% per generation is not remotely accurate for phones or most any microprocessor-based product. Do you even Moore's Law bro?
