How do people get addicted to alcohol?

Not a political topic but this is where I normally post, and there was a comment in another thread and I didn't want to derail it. I'm probably average in propensity towards addiction; I was addicted to nicotine (dip) for 6-7 years and it was pretty tough to quit. The few times I've had pain meds I absolutely see how people can get addicted to them so I always avoided anything harder than booze at parties because I was afraid I might like it too much, but alcohol was always self-limiting for me. The hangover wasn't worth the drunk and that bad experience kept it self-regulating when I was younger and had a tendency to overdo things.
Are there people who don't get hangovers and that makes it really easy for them to get addicted to alcohol? It makes more sense to me if that's the case. Or do they power through them by drinking earlier and earlier in the day and that starts the slide? No judgement, just genuinely curious.

If you properly hydrate yourself, you don't get bad hangovers. A hangover is just the symptoms of dehydration caused by alcohol being a diuretic (it takes more water from your body when expelled than it adds).

I feel like I drink out of boredom. Idk. I don’t think I’m an alcoholic per se but I drink too often than I’d really should

If only there was a place on the Internet where you could ask that question and get good research into this subject

My hangovers were relatively minimal until I was 25. Bad sometimes, but the partying was worth it. At 25, it became much less so. Hangovers start lasting a few days. By that time, people are fairly addicted. It’s used as a crutch for everything to social situations to every problem you have.

Ihmo, I think some people have addictive personality traits that give them a higher propensity to become addicted to something. Again, only an opinion. I could certainly be wrong.

Same way people are addicted to Marijuana.

I think sleep is a big part of it for mild alcoholism. People who drink 6-12 drinks a night.
They can't sleep without it.
So, they get drunk every night.
Others simply can't function without being in an altered state. My brother is like this.
He has to be high or drunk all the time.

You ever had withdrawals from opiates. You’d kill for just a hangover.

I guy made a comment in another thread about his prior addiction, I figured I might get real answers instead of something clinical.

There were bad alcoholics in my family tree. Like an uncle who dies of a ruptured cirrhotic liver. And there were more than him. My dad who was a doc said we had the gene. So I think there is something to that. I rarely drink but I'm not opposed to doing it. Obviously there is also a tie to mental health like depression, anxiety, stress etc. Some people like the buzz.

Jordan Peterson did research on this and I found it very interesting.
Some people get a massive chemical release from drinking 2-3 drinks quickly , whereas other don’t.
Those who do tend to be more prone to problem drinking for obvious reasons.

No, never had anything more than a single prescription for after a surgery or kidney stone. But short term you can feel pretty good on opiates and there's zero hangover the next day. By the time you have withdrawals you're already pretty far down the road, aren't you?

Just asking a question; there are people here who've done it and beaten it. Your opinion is noted.

With regard to the gene, I’ve come to think people have a propensity to be depressed or have anxiety than there being an addictive gene. Drugs/alcohol is just how they cope. JMO

Just about everything we do in life is a habit.
The time you wake up, your hobbies, what you eat, checking your phone, everything.
You feed a habit enough, it’ll overcome your self control. From alcohol and cigarettes to exercising and even drinking water.
The disease concept is bogus. It’s an action someone takes repeatedly until it becomes a habit, until it takes on a life of its own. Anyone can get there, but most people aren’t interested/committed enough to let it go that far.
